BrickFair VA 2013 is a few days away, and if you live within a 3 hour drive of any LEGO convention I would argue you should make the trip to visit or attend said nearby convention. Why? Because attending such an event is one of the most fun things you will do with your year! You'll make new friends, get to truly geek out, and grab some exclusive LEGO gear not found in stores. Still need a little convincing on why a day-trip or full-weekend vacation is worth your time? Read on.
The BZPower staff would like to offer a warmhearted congratulations to Toa Lhikan Hordika and Turakii #1 Lavasurfer on their recent marriage! Vance and Christie, respectively, were wed on Sunday, July 28, 2013, and some of their closest BZPower friends attended to share the joy. They are honeymooning at BrickFair this week in Virginia and are enjoying themselves as they see the DC sights. Read on for some pictures of the new couple, and please join us in celebrating this new made-in-LEGO union.

The BZPowercast Turns Four!
July is almost over, and before I get completely caught up in BrickFair fun, I figured I should post the next episode of the BZPowercast. You can download it right here
or pick it up via iTunes or RSS. Here's a preview of what you can expect:
Episode 49 marks four years of the BZPowercast - hoorah! This month we start off by bringing back Than the Moa to subject him to a Staff Interview. Then Windrider comes by to do a How-To BZP about all the awesome Anniversary fun. Emzee joins us after that to talk about the recently-held Brick Fiesta event in Dallas, Texas. And things close off with another dramatic comic reading from Hahli Husky and Janus. Happy Anniversary BZPower!

Real-Life LEGO Construction Ideas
At some point I think we've all wished we could build full-size structures out of giant LEGO blocks. Dark Roasted Blend's compilation of LEGO-themed architecture and construction projects
shows us exactly what that would look like. We may have covered one or two of these in the past, but it's worth giving the entire collection a look.

Warning: BrickFair Impending
There's less than a week until BrickFair Virginia
! If you haven't already registered, there's still time, and you can at least come to the public expo on Saturday, August 3rd and Sunday, August 4th from 11AM to 4PM. You can also still buy tickets to our Laser Tag and Pizza Party
on Saturday evening which should be a blast. And don't forget the free concert
by Nervous Pudding on Sunday at noon. Both are open to everyone whether or not you're at the full convention. I'm super-excited and can't wait to see you all there!
Saturday, July 27, 2013
Whew, what a crazy and fun week it's been. I hope you've all enjoyed our Anniversary celebrations and the announcements we've made. The list of what happened is too long to even fit on the front page, so you'll have to read on to see what took place.

Free Concert at BrickFair
Going to BrickFair Virginia next week? Happen to live in Northern Virginia? Well it just so happens then that you're going to be in the perfect spot for an awesome concert! BZPower Members Windrider, Princess Grr, Comrade Gato, and Calles are also members of the rock band Nervous Pudding
, and they're putting on a show for you all. This free concert will take place at noon on Sunday, August 4th at E.C. Lawrence Park Amphitheater. The venue's address is 5040 Walney Rd, Chantilly VA, about two miles away from BrickFair. If you don't have a car, fret not, the band is providing a shuttle service from BrickFair to the venue - just contact Princess Grr, aka Andrew (not me) in advance of the show. They're putting on this free show as a special gift for BZPower Members and BrickFair attendees (although it's open to anyone) - I hope a lot of you can make it!

BZPower has long had a very rigid and stringent advertising policy limiting what our members could link to on the site. There are several reasons for this, but primarily we want BZPower to be a family-friendly place, and lets be honest, a lot of stuff on the Internet isn't very family-friendly. But still, times change, and BZPower must be dragged kicking and screaming into the future. That's why today we're announcing a major overhaul to our advertising policy and some new functionality on the site to help us keep our family-friendly focus.
Brick Fiesta 2013 Wrapup
BZPower Forum Assistant Emzee hung out at Brick Fiesta a couple weeks ago and decided to share some of his thoughts:
Brick Fiesta 2013 was a blast! This convention (taking place near Dallas, TX) had lots of vendors, cool MOCs, and some great people. It was odd how many people here actually remembered me from 2011 in Austin (they must have really good memory). I got to catch up with Kevin Hinkle, attend his Q&A session, meet the Austin chapter of TexLUG, watch some Mindstorms robots fight each other, and take home a free Legend of Chima prize (the Chima marketing team had a booth here instead of LEGO representatives). Take a look through my Dropbox folder to see pictures and videos that I took.
Sounds like a fun time, wish I could have been there!
An Unexpected Auction
How much would you pay for a rare LEGO minifigure? How about a minifigure of Azog, the Pale Orc, from The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey? Well, of the 100 that were handed out at this week's San Diego Comic Con, a single Azog minifig has collectors bidding upwards of $1,525 in one ongoing Ebay auction, while others are currently selling for $800-$900. This continues a trend of high-value minifigs, with the recent Mr. Gold figure selling for nearly $1,000 in recent days. Sound interesting? Click here
for a full article and for links to the auctions, and enjoy the madness.

New Member Policy Removed
For the last few years, BZPower has had a policy in place requiring the first five posts (originally ten) of all new members to be approved before they are able to utilize all the features BZPower has to offer. Today it brings me great pleasure to announce that we will no longer be requiring new user to go through this process. New accounts will still be approved by the Administration, but once activated they will be free to post as they see fit. I appreciate the patience of all our new members in the past few years and hope that this change will help encourage more discussion on the forums.
BZPower Archive Update
Earlier this year we began to have some problems with our Archives, the instance of the old forums with all the posts from before the recent major upgrade. This was in part due to a malicious individual who deleted parts of the database as well as several backups that were stored on our server. The Administration has done our best to try to restore things, but there's still a lot of missing content that I'm afraid no longer exists. In addition, the software that keeps the archives running has become outdated and insecure, and may be part of how portions of the site were hacked recently. With all this in mind, we have made the decision to close down the Archives and move forward, focusing on our new forums and the future of BZPower. It was not an easy decision, but in the end, there was not much we could do. On behalf of the Administration, I'm truly sorry that we have to do this, but I'm hoping everyone can understand the reasons behind our decision.

LEGO City Undercover Games Up for Grabs
I think it's safe to say the big LEGO game for this year is LEGO City Undercover for the Wii U along with its prequel LEGO City Undercover: The Chase Begin for the 3DS. LEGO has graciously given BZPower a copy of each game to give away to some lucky members and what better time to do that than during our anniversary? Head over to our new raffle section
to enter to win the game on the platform of your choice!
BrickFair Virginia is almost here, so what better time to report on the previous BrickFair, which took place in New England. Better late than never, I always say. Anyway, Manchester, New Hampshire was home to the first major AFOL convention in the Northeast, and the fans turned out a-plenty. There was a great turnout, especially among Bionicle fans, which was one of the best-represented themes there. The public presence wasn't as good as we would have hoped, but everyone still had a lot of fun. To get an idea of what was on display - read on!

Who Will Be the Staff Survivor?
Many moons ago, there was a game played on BZPower the likes of which had never been seen outside of reality television. Today, Staff Survivor returns
! Fourteen staff members find themselves on the island of Voya Nui and only one can be crowned the winner. They will face trials, first as teams and then on their own. Who will that come out on top? It's up to you to decide. Go find out how you can play!
New LEGO Marvel Superheroes Trailer
It's been a crazy week both on and off site, and I'm sure many of you know exactly why: The San-Diego Comic-Con happened over the weekend. We'll probably be catching up on everything that happened all week, but for now I'll leave you with the newest trailer
released for the LEGO Marvel Superheroes game.

It's no secret that forum activity hasn't been what it was since Bionicle ended. A couple years back we did some reorganization when we unveiled the newly-redesigned forums. Today we're announcing that we'll be combining and moving some things around in an effort to streamline the forum experience. For the full details, please read on!

What are LEGO Mixels?
A new teaser site has appeared advertising LEGO Mixels, and features three interesting brick-built characters. Apparently they're coming in Spring 2014 and are connected to Cartoon Network. You can view the teaser site here

Happy Anniversary BZPower!
Today BZPower celebrates its twelfth anniversary. Twelve years - can you believe it? I know I can't, and I'm sure that a dozen years ago when Dimensioneer started up BZCommunity he didn't think we'd still be around. We'd like to thank you all for keeping our site going all this time. And now, onto the fun stuff! For the next week all members will get the perks of Premier Membership - rank images, blogs, poll-making, and more! And if you like what you see, we're also offering sale on Premier
Memberships - you can get 10% off until August 10th using coupon code BZPdozen. And don't worry, this is just the start!
Win Stuff on BZPower
It's time for more anniversary fun! We like to try to introduce something new each anniversary to celebrate another year of BZPower. This time around, we're introducing a raffle system
to make it easier to give stuff away. The first set we'll be raffling off is the 75019 AT-TE
, which has been graciously donated by LEGO. If you want a shot at it, tickets are $1 each, and you can buy more for a greater chance to win! The money will go to covering the cost of the raffle system and supporting BZPower's ongoing server costs. Good luck everyone!

TITANS AND MONSTERS: ATTACK ON BZ KORO!
BZPower's anniversary is almost here and what better way to celebrate it than a contest? How about a MONSTER
contest? Global Moderator Hahli Husky has officially gone insane and has agreed to host a forum-wide conglomeration of contests covering almost every creative thing we could think of (sorry, no interpretive dance). There will, however, be building (constraction and system), writing, drawing, composing, directing, comicing (is that a word?), and game-making. Prefer to keep your creative endeavors outside the realm of LEGO? You can participate too! LEGO has donated some awesome prizes, so you'll definitely want to enter. Head on over to the contest topic
for the full scoop!

Final FFM Polls
It has been a long journey, but at last the final round of Flash Fiction Marathon
voting has arrived! Two polls remain: Bionicle
, containing the top-voted stories in each of these overall categories. Now is the time to decide the ultimate winners of the FFM. Now is the time to do your civic duty: read and vote!
LEGO Sets To Be Made For The LEGO Movie
LEGO is unveiling a lot of stuff at San Diego Comic-Con this week, and one of them was the announcement of a series of sets based off the upcoming The LEGO Movie. There are expected to be 17 construction sets, a series of Collectible Minifigures, and even a video game based on the characters and story from the movie. You can read more of the official announcement here

What's a Moa With You?
It's time to start planning for another episode of the BZPowercast, and that means a new Staff Interview. As you might have figured out from the title, our lucky interviewee this month is none other than Than the Moa, Global Moderator extraordinaire. Send him a message
and ask him some questions. Examples include: Why do you like Halo more than BZPower? What is your favorite Bionicle set? Where did you go? When will you make more skins? How excited are you for the Xbox One? Whatever your questions may be, ask them soon!
US Naval Academy to use Mindstorms
American sailors now will get to play with LEGO's most popular robotics sets. Okay, maybe not play, but the US Naval Academy in Annapolis will be using the Mindstorms NXT sets to train sailors to program and work with robotics. I suppose any kids who already have been tinkering with Mindstorms will have something of a head start if they join the navy.

Free Hero Factory Accessory Pack on S@H
LEGO Shop@Home is offering an interesting promotion for all you Hero Factory fans. As this landing page indicates
, with any Hero Factory purchase you can get a free exclusive accessory pack. Based on the image, it looks like the pack contains a special black brain-alien-thing and a fire sword (not the same one that comes with Furno). My guess is you're not going to see some of those pieces in those colors elsewhere, so if you're interested - go get one now!

How Innovation Nearly Killed LEGO
While we've already reported on Robertson's new book, Brick by Brick
, GSR has uncovered another interesting interview with the author: How too much innovation nearly killed The LEGO Company. It offers a particularly interesting insight into the failed Galidor line and and how desperate the company was to create something new for the market. I recommend giving it a read

2013 LEGO Comic-Con Exclusive Minifigs
The exclusive minifigures for the upcoming San Diego Comic Con have been revealed. Again, they're associated with the Super Heroes theme: Green Arrow and Black-Suit Superman represent the DC side, while alt-suit Spider-Man and Spider-Woman hail from Marvel. If you're in the area and attending Comic Con, you might get a chance to pick one up, while the rest of us must look on in jealousy. You can see pictures and read more about them here

Flash Fiction Marathon Semifinals
The battle of words has been fierce and fast-paced, and it seems that the Flash Fiction Marathon has gone by in...well...a flash. But it's not quite over yet: the semifinal polls
in each Bionicle and OTC category have been posted! These represent the best of the best from all ten flash fiction themes, meaning that this is your chance to vote for the stories that will move on to the final round of voting. So go forth, and give the remaining entries a read and your vote, and make sure the best story wins!

LEGO 3D Printer
More and more, we find, if it exists, there's probably a LEGO version of it. You may have heard of 3D printers--machines that can make objects out of plastic or similar substances from 3D computer models. One individual by the name of Matthew Krueger has constructed a 3D printer made completely from LEGO bricks, entitled "Legobot". Legobot uses candy or glue to make its creations, and unfortunately it is quite limited in what it can do. However, it's quite an interesting creation, and you can see it here

Send your MOCs to BrickFair Virginia
In less that a month several hundred AFOLs (followed by thousands of members of the general public) will descend upon Chantilly, Virginia for the United States' largest LEGO fan convention - BrickFair Virginia. If you're not able to attend or visit in person, there's still time for you to support the event. Head on over to my blog
and read all about how your MOCs can be displayed and seen by all those people. Time is running out, though, so you had better get building!

LEGO Used To Create Prosthetic Leg
When Christina Stephens lost part of her left leg in an accident, she didn't let it get her down. Instead, she has built a prosthetic leg out of LEGO bricks, UPI reports
. While not overly practical in its current state, it's still quite the statement, and it shows that our favorite plastic toys can be used for just about anything.

Chat With Greg Farshtey
Greg Farshtey may not be able to post on BZPower anymore, but it looks like there is one place he can still interact with fans. Over on the LEGO Message Boards, there's a topic
encouraging members to ask questions of the long-time LEGO author. If you have anything that's been on your mind about Bionicle, Hero Factory, or Ninjago, here's your chance to maybe find out!

Brick by Brick on Store Shelves
Christian Faber has updated his blog
with a plug for a new book: Brick by Brick: How LEGO Rewrote the Rules of Innovation and Conquered the Global Toy Industry
. Why should this interest you? Well apparently there's a whole chapter about Bionicle, which Faber promises contains some never-heard-before info (he should know, he was interviewed for it). His blog has a question from an interview with the author, Professor David C. Robertson, about our favorite toy line. I've added a copy to my shopping cart and look forward to seeing what new information about Bionicle is in there!
Happy Fourth of July
I'd like to wish everyone in America (and those of you who are abroad as well) a happy and safe Independence Day. Enjoy some barbecue, watch some fireworks, and remember all the people that helped found this country and make it what it is today. I hope the next 237 years are even better than the last!

ATLAS Reaches 10,000 Votes on Cuusoo
Another project has reached the Review stage in the LEGO Cuusoo program: A model of the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider! Considering the balance of scientific frontiers in LEGO models (and especially those approved in the program), I'd say this one has a good chance of passing, but we'll have to wait and see.
