"Today is the day! I know many of you have been eagerly awaiting this moment, and I myself have been practically bursting with excitement!" exclaims Nuile zealously. "With thanks to Cherixon for all his aid in the creation of this league, and with an unexpected multitude of members already signed up, I am honored to declare the League of Authors officially open!"

This being our first bi-weekly challenge, Nuile decided to use a theme he thought expedient for the occasion:

Creation

"The act of creating; the state of having been created; the act of investing; creating a wad of spit in your mouth," explains Nuile; "interpret it as you want and integrate it into your Short Story or Epic chapter within the next week, and you will be rewarded with one point." This amount will be customary for future themes as well.

On a similar note, Nuile has contrived this challenge for you:

Create a Species

"That's right, invent a being of some sort, whether sapient or not. Give it an appearance, some charicteristics, and name it. Make it real; create it! Lastly, work it into your story this week." This too will earn you one point, and this too will be the sum for completing future challenges.

"So now you have your theme, you have your challenge, and so you're all set...or are you?"

Augment Your Lexical Ken

"No, I did not just swear," Nuile assures you. "In other words, I said, 'enhance your vocabulary and grammatical knowledge.' And that is what, each week in this section, we will try to do. Correctly using the following words and grammar tips in your story will earn you--you guessed it--one point."

Ex-pe-di-ent n. Appropriate to a purpose; suitable.

Contrive v. 1. To plan with cleverness or ingenuity; devise. 2. To invent or fabricate, especially by improvision. 3. To plan with evil intent; scheme. 4. To bring about, as by scheming; manage.

El-lip-sis (plural ellipses) points are three evenly spaced dots used to mark the omission of words from a quotation: Of lecturing, Dickens said, “It was a good thing to have a couple of thousand people…in the palm of one’s hand.” They may also be used to signify faltering speech: "I wish I could tell you, but...I...I can't," Laura sputtered. Always remember, in either case, to retain punctuation when an ellipsis is used at the end of a sentence: Johnny muttered, "When I get my hands on you....You just better not come back!...If you do, you'll regret it!"

"So, what are you waiting for? Get to work on that Short Story or Epic chapter and post it here in the next two weeks, whether it relates to the present challenge or not. Just for writing you will be awarded four points. So go ahead and follow the theme, complete the challenge, use one of the words and the symbol, or none of the above, it doesn't matter; just write!"

There you have it, the first challenge! We would appreciate it if you tell us what bonuses you qualify for; though, of course, we'll still be checking.;)

Well then, see you in two weeks, when it will be my turn to present you with the challenge!
