Writers' Club

Welcome to the Writer's Club! The BZPower Writers' Club is a group of writers that have gotten together to help each other improve their literacy skills as well as discuss their story ideas. This entry may be used for discussion of the club or of literature in general; I'll probably make another entry for writing ideas/discussion, and I'll be making a Library entry soon [please post your works there!].

Purpose

The purpose of the Writers’ Club is to get people more active in the Library. In both writing and reviewing [though mostly the latter], the Library seems to be getting less and less activity. And so, that’s why I – with the help of others – created this club. The basic motto is “review and you will receive reviews” – which is exactly what this club is about. If you join, then you are asked to review a certain number of literary works per month. Also, there will be a Library compiled of literary works written by club members; those must be reviewed first, in return for any reviews you have given.

Joining

We ask that before one joins, you agree to the following:

-You agree to review at least three literary works a month. If you are part of the SSCC, ECC, or COTSCG then two of your three reviews may be done for those clubs. However, I ask that for at least one review, you either review something from the Writers’ Club Library or a story in the BZPower Library that hasn’t gotten much attention [for now, you only need to review something from the BZP Library that you think needs a review; I'll put up a Library entry and once that starts getting some attention, then you should review those if another club member hasn't].

-You try to write frequently. All we ask is that you try to expand your skills. Whether it be writing in an RPG, or just jotting down ideas on a piece of paper that we will never see, I’m trying to get people to write more in this club.

Then, all you have to do is fill out the following form, and place it in this entry:

Username: (put a link to your member profile here)

Current status: (Any written works of your own? Libraries? What stories [if any] are you working on right now?)

What do you like to write?: (What style of stories do you like to write? Longer/shorter stories? Mystery stories? Adventure stories? Romantic stories?)

What to look for: (as a reader/reviewer, what do you look for in a story? Good grammar? Interesting characters? Descriptions? Good solid plots?)

Misc: (What do you do? What other Clubs are you in? What forums do you visit in BZP? Anything else you want to put in here; hobbies in real life, etc.)

Contests

Once a month there will be a contest for all Writers’ Club members. Most of the time, there won’t be a prize, but it will instead earn you the title of “Writer of the Month” in the Writers’ Club, and should motivate you to write more.

I also hope to set up some sort of collaborative story between club members at some point, so you guys can discuss that in this entry, if you have any thoughts on the subject.

The first contest [with prizes, and possibly open to the public] will take place after the Short Stories Autumn Olympics have finished. Post here for any suggestions.

I'm already a member, but I'll fill this out for reference...

Current status: The BZ-Metru Story, though currently suspended

What do you like to write?: Adventure a little, horror/suspense/action more recently, and one uber-fail try of romance.

What to look for: Grammar. If your writing is illegible, then why would the reader bother reading?

Misc: I do as I do.

I see I'm already listed, but I'll give this in anyways:

Current status:
I have written one epic, the first of a trilogy,

I have also written and completed a short comedy based off of Lewa0111's
. It's called
.

Finally, I wrote
, a short story, as a sort of prequel to
Legends of the Last Toa
for the old Writer's Club's Contest. I don't like the title too much, but whatever.

As for WiPs, I'm working on Book 2 of
Legends of the Last Toa
. Working title is
Virus
.

What do you like to write?:
I've written one of each type of literary work on BZP, and I like Bonesiii's "Adventure Mystery" genre, I'd categorize my two more serious works in it. Maybe I'll something different sometime.

What to look for:
I nit-pic over grammar, and I love believable characters/tech/plots. Description is something I like only in moderation; if you've got too much it detracts from the plot and suspense, which is my main problem with Tolkein's
the Lord of the Rings
. I dislike overused cliches, and I really hate the generic "a bunch of Matoran turn into Toa, save the island, and find/protect/create/destory the uber-powerful kanohi/artifact" plot structure.

Misc:
I'm part of the ECC, and the BBC CC on BZP. I try too MOC as often as I can, and I have entered every contest since #42 except for a big block from 48-53.

Yeah...I guess that's it.

Enjoy!

Hmm, nice redo. Could someone check out my new chapter I've posted in Shadow enclosures an epic I co-write with KTM.

Could you provide a link, please?

But, yeah, I'm not even sure if I'll make a 'library' entry; I'll add them all the main post. Also, feel free to discuss ideas of short stories, like I said.

Anyone entering the short stories contest?

Yeah I don't think we need a list of stories--people should just look in the comments in discussions and all that, and PMing is good too. Nice layout.

I'll make a Bio just for reference too.

Current status: I’m currently an active writer. My library can be found here. I’m working on a few short stories and an epic; also a novel I hope consider helping me get into a writing career.

What do you like to write?: I try to be open-minded and try all sorts of things. Though, I love to write romances, action/adventures, and I’ve recently acquired the taste of poems.

What to look for: My weak point is grammar, so I usually try to focus on the depth—how much the characters, plot, and setting affect me, and how it pulls me into the story.

Misc: I’m currently a Short Story Critic, and hiatus in the Epic Critic Club. My activity has been very bumpy lately because of health issues, but I hope to sort this out a bit while in the Writers’ Club. I enjoy giving reviews when I have the time, so feel free to contact me about that.

They're not that brilliant, but hey-ho. Check Chapters 3 ( Up until 'The Toa of Water brushed past Xaphor and into the marketplace. "We'll just have to find it then won't we." She said as she charged off down the marketplace. Xaphor shrugged and followed close behind.', not the fight bit at the end, KTM added that) , 5, 7, 8, 10 and 11. KTM may have posted 3 and 5, but they are written by me.

I think I'll join. I've been meaning to start reviewing more often, and I've been trying to expand my skills =)

One question--do we post links to our reviews in this entry like the SSCC/ECC?

Current status: I'm actually writing a ton of works at the moment. Recently, I completed my epic, "Fog: Korym's Annals", which is a prequel to my first epic, "Early Sunsets: Iaja's Tale". At the moment, I'm working on book three, "Late Dawns: Iaja's Legacy", and plan to release it this Christmas Eve. I'm also in the process of re-writing an epic called "Jump!!!" which was lost when my computer crashed.

My library can be found here.

My favorite short story of my own is "Inferno", a tie-in to an epic of mine.

My favorite epic of my own is "Early Sunsets", mentioned earlier.

What do you like to write?: I'm mostly a fan of long stories. I usually make my own mythos for my stories to take place in, which results mainly in expansive sagas as opposed to free-standing stories. Genre is a loose term when describing what I like to write -- I just like writing about emotions and philosophy. I'm mainly driven by friendship, romance, and purpose, which I like to incorporate into adventure or mystery type stories.

What to look for: While I'm what some might call obsessed with picking out people's grammatical errors, I tend to only point out the major ones when reviewing; the main thing I look for is developed characters and a unique, three-dimensional plot.

Misc: I'm in a few BZP clubs, including the C.I.R.C.L.E. fanon, the Epics Critics Club, and Silver Avohkii Productions. On BZP, I spend most of my time in the Creative Outlet and Library. In real life, I spend a lot of my time writing non-BIONICLE works. I'm in the process of writing and attempting to publish several short stories and a myriad of novels.

This is an inspiring idea, and I like what this club stands for. The BZP Library could use more people to read, review, and write. Admittedly, I myself, have reviewed few stories. But I would much like to, and you have inspired me to. I would happily uphold the standard of reviewing three topics a month as a member, and would like to become such.

Also, I have a question. The reviews you ask of the club members can be done in any area of the BZP Library, yes? For example, I could do one in Short Stories, one in Epics, and one in Comedies every month?

Current status: I don't have many posted works at the moment, and sadly not many more written. I'd like to find more time to write, but it's tough. I will continue to try, though. Currently I'm working on an epic, titled The Rise of Scorch, of which I have completed the first part(four chapters long), and plan to write three or four more of similiar length. I also have a comedy in the works, which hasn't been posted, and one I've temporarily discontinued to work on the new one, Ask mantax.

What do you like to write?: I prefer long stories, whether I'm reading or writing them. My favorite genres are Adventure and/or Mystery, and if I had to choose a label for the non-comedy stories I like to write, I guess I'd pick Adventure/Mystery.

What to look for: Good grammar is a must with me. I try not to be too critical of others' grammar when posting, but if you are writing a story, good grammar is definately something I want to see. I like plots to be vast and complex, leaving a world of questions unsanswered, leaving it open to your imagination. There should always be a decent network of characters. Heroes, villains, and characters that are both or neither. Complex personalities, as well. And a good description is always helpful to form an image of the story in your mind. I dislike swearing and inappropriate subjects in a story, but that's not typically a problem with Bionicle.

Misc: Generally what I do on BZP is post in hot topics, view and review Stories/MoCs, and occasionally browse General Discussion, asides from posting my own MoCs/Stories/etc. In real life I'm an avid reader, Lego fan, Pokémon fan, cook, and, of course, writer. Someday I hope to publish a few stories, but that's a long ways off.

The SS Olympics -- and there will be a new contest in a few weeks or so [for the club].

Hmm. I'm thinking of not including Comedies, only because that forum is so... un-literary, you could say. I'm not trying to say anything against comedies, but the style almost every one is written in isn't exactly good practice for literary writing, if you know what I mean. I'm open to suggestions on that; if you guys want to be able to review for Comedies, too, then I'll most-likely allow that.

I agree with Velox, no comedies--there are a few good authors that make great comedies, but they are so few. So I'd say we don't bother with comedies, except on occasions.

I've been thinking about getting into this for some time, but three reviews a month should be keep-up-able with myself. ^^;;

-Working on a 25,000 word story to submit to a magazine. The up-side is that if it were to be submitted, I'd get some money for my efforts. Do I expect to get in? Not really, but hey, it's a lot of fun.

-Also working on another 5,000 word story for yet, another magazine. Again, they're offering some money for the efforts, but I'm mostly doing it for the fun -- and because it was recommended to me by someone a while back.

-BZP. Now, I have a few things on this website: Most of my epics, they aren't finished... which saddens me, but when I get the time, and when I find my outlines [;-;] I'll get back to wrapping -all- of them up.

-I also have a library on the forums, there's a link in my sig. Haven't written anything Bionicle related in a while now, and the stuff I do have is not really all that great [i always read through it, and think that there's just something I need to change... just can't place a finger on it.] There's roughly 20 or so Short Stories in there, and a few links to some epics. [i haven't updated my library -fully- for a while now, so the "Recommendations" list is pretty small]

-I am also thinking about doing the National November Writing Month, writing a novel of 50,000 words. I have an idea in mind, that I could use.

-The last thing I'm working on, is my own novel. Been at it for nearly five years, but I love writing it.

What do you like to write?: I tend to go for medium-length short stories [4,000 - 5,000 area], but I intend on doing longer stories [10,000+ words, mainly so I can fit the criteria for some publishers, and could possibly compile my non-published writings into something at some point]. I like to write many genres, from Dark Fantasy, to attempts at Horror, straight off to Science Fiction, and even Historical Fantasy. I also do enjoy doing some romance-circled things --- I guess my SS on BZP, Best Friend [Pretty bad title] would fit the romance genre pretty well. However, I tend to end the stories without a pleasant ending, though, sometimes I do. Guess it depends more on my mood than anything else [And the characters, I have this tendency to really beat on characters I don't like]

I used to write fan-fiction, based off of existing novels and Bionicle. It was a great way to actually start, but now I go for more original things.

What to look for: As a reader, I look for an array of things. Most of the time, I tend to pick at the characters, simply because developed, interesting, and believable characters are just so interesting to read about, versus the generic John Smith. I also look into the plots, and motives behind some of the events that occur and some organizations in the story [if any are present]. I do go at grammar a bit, but not on a huge level -- as quite frankly, I'm not superbly well-versed in the "grammar" field.

I basically, just look for the more story-orientated details, versus the technical details [unless it really, really detracts from the story]

Misc: What clubs was I once in? Well...

-I was at one time, in the SSCC on BZP, but I had to fall out of it due to the fact that doing the amount of stories needed within that specific timeframe was murder, especially with High School starting, along with some life-things that came up.

-I'm a part of the COT RPG Judge team, which is basically reviewing a form of writing -- RPGs.

-Other than the highlighted things above... I'm not really all that interesting of a person. Everything else, can pretty much be found in my profile... but even then, I need to re-do my "Interests" list.

Ah. I have a concept idea, I might go with it, but I honestly haven't written anything yet, so if I manage to get something in I'll be extremely happy. :)

I think it's a good idea though, so I think I might end up writing it, even if it's not done in time for the contest.

Current status: I recently discovered my talent in (and joy of) writing, and so my works are few. However, I've been slaving away at a not-really-short story for a while now, and doing side-writing on the side. Working on how to efficiently juggle concepts around. :)

What do you like to write?: Stories that I have to really think about to write. If I can slap together a plot with no meaning, then I don't feel that I've done my job - I hope to communicate in my writing, whether it's satirical (The Thespians) or deep (Scars). Occasionally, I will make a story just for laughs (The Vezon Toy).

What to look for: Similar to what I like to write - I want to either think or laugh. What matters most is that the author effectively communicated what they wanted to be noticed, which usually requires for something to be communicated - thus I like themes. I also enjoy when someone pushes archetypes - for example, showing the dark side of being a Toa, rather than only showing their heroic sides.

Misc: I don't only write. I'm also a big math person, and for a while now I've been trying to think of an effective way to show people why I like math - because it has nothing to do with how smart a person is, contrary to popular belief. It's not about accuracy and super-computation. It's not about understanding a boatload of symbols. It's about elegance, discovery, pattern - it is, at its core, the art of thought! So I've been trying to figure out a way to write a story that can show people why math really can be worth the difficulties. Not an easy job, I'm discovering. :/ Besides math, I like to do pastel art and face-drawing. I love drawing faces, for some reason.

EDIT: Reviewed one story so far: Walking Home

I'm going to be the bum and say I won't/cannot review much of anything until the end of November because of NaNo/Life/bad health. I'm trying to cut as much off my plate until I have some things sorted.

Still, this place needs more people. Is there any writers' that haven't been pointed to this topic yet?

To reply to what the answer to my question, Velox, I guess I agree with you there. Comedies aren't generally literate, and even if they're literate they're written in script form. If you want to be a movie writer, okay, but if you want to be a novel writer, not good practice. :P
