The escape key.

 

Seriously, you have a button on your keyboard labeled "escape" (okay it's "esc" but still).

 

This is one of those things that everyone should just stop and think about for a second.

 

It's not the "stop" key, it's not the "quit" key, it's not the "cancel" key, it's the "ABORT ABORT ABANDON SHIP GET ME OUTTA HERE" key.

i used to use it when programs were being butts and wouldn't close

 

so i always viewed it as escaping the clutches of that not-properly-working program

 

haven't used it in a long time though now that i think about it

I find myself wondering if the ESC key is going to phase out of existence - I recall using it frequently (and needing to use it) for all kinds of different purposes back in the 1990s, but it seems those purposes have largely been shifted to other keys or (more often) mouse commands.

 

I'm trying to think of a remaining "essential" use of ESC for me these days and I'm actually coming up blank.

It's used a lot nowadays in browsers to close full-screen video players. I can't come up with any uses that aren't program-specific.
