Nikon or Canon: Which to buy?

Voxumo

So I am planning on taking a somewhat freelance class that a person is offering in photography, and a scholarship I have is able to cover the costs of the class, which includes having to get a DSLR Camera... The director of the class is only allowing Canon or Nikon Cameras, and wants at least a 55mm lens attachment... Odd limitations but not gonna argue.

Now I've never bought a DSLR camera, nor can I say I ever really have looked at buying them. As such I'm hoping those who might frequent my blog or see this might be able to help me choose which is the better option of the two?

I've been a Nikon user for over 3 years, and although I've never used Canon, I gather the differences aren't huge. In my experience the Nikon/Canon divide is a bit cultish, people like to insist that their brand is superior, but it's not like anybody can look at a picture and know which it was taken by.

The only potential big difference that jumps to mind is lenses - obviously once you own a Nikon/Canon body, you're committed to buying lenses that use their lens mount. If you have any friends or family who also have a DSLR, it might be beneficial to use the same brand, because then you can share or borrow lenses.

This was one thing I kept finding when trying to find reviews and whatnot for the two, that pretty much once you choose a brand to stick with it. Though I have no friends or family who own DSLRs, so not really an issue in that regard, but is a good thing to consider.

Arr, lad! With a proper bay of cannons by yer side, ye can scupper any ship ye should spy! Then ye can plunder all the booty ye want! YAR HAR HAR HAR!

I'm a Canon user myself, but I have little brand loyalty as far as cameras go - if it works/has a good reputation, I'm cool with it.

I have noticed when looking at photography courses and such here in Canada that they tend to specify certain Nikon cameras, whereas Canon is mentioned less frequently - but that could also simply imply a business partnership with Nikon.

All in all, my advice would be the same as Brickeens; if you have close friends or family that use one brand, it might be better to try that one out first.

As an old BS01er, I can firmly say that things which are non-canon are generally looked down upon.

Gosh dangit you...
