Conflict

Everyone go read Pomegranate's blog entry.

I've been thinking along those same lines. In a way, I get where all the negativity comes from; the fact is, this is a community of mostly adults, and wherever there are a bunch of adults there will almost always be conflict. The fact that this is a forum about a children's toy is irrelevant. But at the same time, adults should know how to handle that conflict when it arises in a mature and effective way. Conflict is natural, but when it turns into drama, we have a problem.

Back in 2011 or thereabouts, I entered into what are commonly referred to as my dark ages (from the Brothers' Brick: "That period in a LEGO fan’s life when he or she sets aside LEGO in favor of school, dating, motor vehicles, and other non-LEGO pursuits.") A few months ago, I returned to LEGO and BZP and found my favourite community a different place than when I left it. Geez, I can't even leave you people alone for a few years...

I've managed to avoid seeing most of the drama that occurs on BZP, let alone get involved in it. I probably couldn't even tell you which topic or even sub-forum it's in if you asked me. I intend to keep it that way. I'll stick to blogs and B/S/T, where people can have rational discussions and talk about Bionicle without being ridiculed and having their opinions trashed.

All the drama used to be in the blogs but it seems to have permanently migrated over to S&T.

It sucks to be part of a community now known primarily for aggressive and childish behavior.

Honestly I think it all stems from a philosophy of confrontation. It seems like the first things people jump to is hate (or something close to it) whenever they see a dissenting opinion. Regardless of whether or not said opinion is bigoted, it is unfair to everyone involved to assume that such statements were said with intent.

I don't know. I keep thinking things will pass over like they always will, but they just seem to linger for far longer than is good for the community.

I'm getting kinda sick of drama in my life right now. I'm just trying to ignore it and go about doing stuff that makes me happy. It might seem selfish, but I came to this site for myself first and foremost, and, gonna be honest, I kinda want to enjoy my time here.

I stay out of S&T for the most part, not because of attitudes there but just because so much of the discussion there involves either talking about BIONICLE G1 loose ends that I neither know or care much about, or seriously overthinking BIONICLE G2.

However, the notion that the BZPower community has devolved in some way since 2011 surprises me, because my activity here actually diminished in 2011 and 2012 because of the negativity surrounding BIONICLE's cancellation and Hero Factory's introduction, and all things considered I think the community today is a lot more positive than it was back then.

There are still arguments, of course. You can't have a healthy community without the risk of arguments, because a healthy community depends on people having a wide range of opinions. Nobody wants BZPower to become an echo chamber, I don't think. But since those dark days in the immediate aftermath of the BIONICLE theme's cancellation I have seen far fewer topics being closed due to out-of-control arguments, far fewer people accusing people of being traitors or not real BIONICLE fans when they don't agree on everything, and far more openness towards differing points of view.

Bizarre to see folks thinking any of this is new? The amount of argumentation and anger on BZP in these discussions is far smaller than it used to be during the peak BIONICLE community years. Giant topics full of anger and discussion about new sets, new story developments, etc, were commonplace weekly. None of this is new, nor has it escalated at all.
