"I'm good." "Um..."

Posted by ChocolateFrogs , Jun 01 2013 · 207 views

people work life snark
Funny how many customers who I've never met assume I'm asking about their well-being and reply, "I'm good," when I'm merely saying "good morning" to them as they come into the bookstore.

And by golly the amount of snark I repress could fill a swimming pool. (Or a book...hehe.)

And no, we're not going out of business. (And even if we were, what are you going to do about it?)

My favorite has to be when you ask, "Hi, how are you doing today?"

And then...

They are just flat out "I'm just looking."

I'm sorry... what? I was legitimately asking how you are doing today. I wasn't asking what you were doing looking around. Sure I'm here to work, but that doesn't mean I should avoid smalltalk to open up a conversation between us.

Okay, what? If you meant good morning, then say good morning, not "Hi, how are you?".

I mean seriously I don't understand why you can be annoyed by someone for answering your question with, "I am good," because it definitely a valid answer to your question.

And? Some people don't want to have small talk with random people out of blue. I honestly don't, nor my father (Who regularly does tell store workers that, "He just looking." Why? Because he doesn't want to be bother by them.).

Just my two cents on this.

But I never asked how they were doing. I merely said good morning. I don't know them, I could care less how they are doing. I'm more interested in what product they want so I can find it for them as per my job.

Hence me laughing at their self-centeredness and/or automatic response due to assumption.

I should probably change this blog title.

Ah, I get what you are saying now.

I misunderstand that you were actually just saying good morning to them and they answer as if you were inquiring about their well being. Apologizes, sir.

A book store eh? That's pretty awesome. ^_^

My personal sin is assuming people are using the general "Have a nice day!" valediction. To which I generally respond "You too." A nice thought when they have used those exact words, downright befuddling when the waiter has just told you to enjoy your meal.

I have a tendency to say "I'm well" to "Good morning," though for me it's usually due to a small panic of "what phrase is appropriate to use to respond with" and "I'm well" is often the first one I remember. <.<;

I haven't said "I'm good" ever since my English class received a lesson on it's incorrect grammar back in ninth grade, lol.

I got lesson that too. I'm pretty good in remembering to say "well" and not "good," in interviews and things, but in a casual setting I kind of forget to care. And I should probably remedy that.
