3ds Hands-on!

I got some hands-on time for the 3DS today.

IT IS AMAZING.

AMAZING.

Also, some info from my conversation with the staff guy at the event:

- He told me to expect an 8th-Gen Nintendo home console at E3 2012

- He also said that 2012 will be a "big year in gaming" (emphasised on Nintendo)

- The 3DS has a 200MHz GPU (I think it was GPU) underclocked at 133MHz

- It's also got a (I think he said "low power", maybe dual-core) CPU, which is for MULTITASKING (YAY!)

- 64MB of RAM

- Browser is Opera-based, enhanced version of Wii's browser (He said Flash support was highly likely!). The browser MAY have the DSi's problem of not loading large pages fully, but he said it probably won't.

- The 3DS will be a "3D Media Hub" - supporting all kinds of 3D content.

He was a total gaming geek - I think he worked for Nintendo, but I'm not sure (I'll have to check). If he doesn't, take the first two with a grain of salt.

It was seriously incredible to use. I hope I can get one!

EDIT: My Twitter has some more info (I think).

EDIT 2: Just remembered! Twin ARM 9 (Not Cortex, he emphasised) processors, probably low-power too.

That's really awesome you got to try it out! I wish they had one of those events near where I live, but I guess I can handle waiting until the end of the month to pick mine up. =P

Although I hate to burst your bubble, the staff guy you talked to doesn't seem to have all correct information...

First off, there's just no way one of the customer reps showing off the 3DS at the event would be savvy to a new console announcement over a year in advance (however likely it is that Nintendo will be releasing a new one in the next one or two years regardless). That's a pretty close-guarded secret until the actual announcement, and even leaked info only comes out a month or two before that.

Also, it's been reported that Nintendo's actually dropped Opera and will be implementing a NetFront browser instead. That still means Flash/HTML5 are likely, though!

All-in-all it's still a very powerful machine compared to the DSi, and I can't wait until I pick mine up on release day!

I figured he wouldn't know about that - but he seemed like the nintendo hardcore gamer-geek type. Certainly more reliable than the OTHER guy there, who said I should "Ask him" when I asked "Will the browser have flash?" (my first question).

Although I do hope he was right about the Flash bit.

Oh, and something else I forgot - the Miis have many more 'styles' than they used to, and 3DS Miis can't be transferred to the Wii for this reason. I was a bit disappointed when he told me that.

I don't know how widely known this is, btw - I hardly knew anything about the 3DS when I went.

The Wii HD?

I just hope the Wii's going get some more good games; outside of the Metroid series there's very few games that are good and on the Wii. Everything else is being controlled by Microsoft and Sony. :|

A literal "Wii HD" is very feasible. That is, on whatever the next home console is, there should be backwards compatibility with normal Wii games that upscales them to high definition. This has already been shown to be possible with Wii emulators on computers: there are videos all over the internet of how games like Super Mario Galaxy look rendered in 1080p (and it's gorgeous).

So illegal software shows a company who battles such software what it's software can do, and thus drives progress?

Oh, the irony.
