Love it or hate it

If your story (drawing, movie, TV show, food, etc.) invokes the reaction described in the title, does that mean you're doing it right?

Perhaps; perhaps not. Certainly if you've made something that gets a "love it or hate it" reaction, you may have created something that makes people think. That could be seen as a good thing.

On the other hand, it depends on what exactly you're trying to do. If you're trying to write something that is supposed to serve some business function, such as, say, a story to promote a line of merchandise, then creating something that elicits that reaction might not be as productive as creating something that will have broader but only slightly less passionate appeal. Likewise, if you're trying to write something such as a book of philosophy that is supposed to improve society, you'll accomplish less if it completely alienates a lot of people. Even with something written for sheer entertainment, sometimes it's preferable to reach a wider audience than to appeal more strongly to a narrower audience. It all depends on your personal writing goals.
