Gurren Lagann

Last night I finished watching the anime series Gurren Lagann (keep having to remind myself that "Lagann" has two "Ns," not two "Gs").

It was freaking awesome, to put it lightly. The robots just kept getting bigger and bigger and bigger until they become so large that they could actually toss whole galaxies like shurikens. Really. Not to mention almost all of the fight scenes are based solely upon the rule of cool (just like the rest of the series, in fact) and keep getting more and more awesome and over the top and improbable every episode. In fact, it was so awesome that I had to make an "Anime/Cartoons" category on my blog to put it in! (Admittedly that has to do with the fact I forgot to make such a category in the first place, but whatever)

What's even better, IMO, is that the series itself isn't just about a bunch of ridiculously huge mechas fighting each other. It has an actual plot and the characters develop very nicely. This I am thankful for, because while I do enjoy watching light year-sized robots beating the crud out of each other, the characters and plot make it even more interesting. They even gave an in-story reason for all of the ridiculous and awesome things they could do, which is even better IMO.

At first, I didn't really think it was going to be as cool or good as my brothers (who had already watched it before me) made it out to be. I only really watched it because they said it was good, so I wanted to check it out. I thought it was okay during the first few episodes or so, but for me personally it got really awesome in episode 11 for reasons I do not wish to spoil. After that point I genuinely wanted to see what happens next, which is what all good stories ought to be able to do IMO.

My favorite characters are Viral, Simon, Lord Genome/Lordgenome (I prefer the first but it seems to be officially spelled as the latter), Kittan, Nia, and Rossiu. All of them are awesome and get some good development, though there are plenty of other good characters to choose from as well.

A problem I have seen with it, however, is that some of the more minor characters don't get a whole lot of development and can be kind of forgettable compared to the main characters. But I don't see this as a big problem, personally, since the rest of the series definitely makes up for it. I also found the beginning to be a little boring, personally, but this is mostly my opinion and probably varies from person to person, so it's not a real problem IMO.

Overall, the series was epic, awesome, and great. Awesome mechas, cool battles, great plot, well-developed characters, almost everything is awesome beyond words. It's definitely one of my favorite animes I've watched, perhaps even one of my most favorite TV shows in general. Definitely good entertainment, at least in my opinion.
