Catching Fire

My god what was that
that was the best movie I have seen in a very, very long time. A long time ago I wistfully prayed for a movie that would follow the book word-for-word, and though it's been a while since I read it, I cannot think of anywhere it fell short.
It was everything I had wanted it to be, and twice as good as the first one (which I thought was amazing). My singular gripe is so minor it almost doesn't even factor, but Johanna's hair was short and almost buzzed if I'm recalling the book correctly (which I may not be) and that was not the case.
But man. I am definitely seeing that again.

Inspirational Musicians #1: Top Female Vocalists

Posted by The Xinlo , Nov 20 2013 · 101 views

So yeah I'm gonna do this thing where I list not necessarily my favourite musicians, or individuals that I think are the best, but more ones that inspire me personally, who got me reaching for higher things as a musician and who motivate me to do better. Again, not the best, not even always my favourites, just people whose playing/writing/even personality inspires me.

Today I'm gonna start with women singers, and I'll go to males ad other instruments on other days.

so here we go (this was going to be a top 5 list but after going through my music I realized 1) I don't know a whole ton of female singers and 2) only two of them really inspired me):

1. Simone Simons from symphonic metal band Epica:

Posted Image

Mrs. Simons is one of the most amazing singers I've ever had the pleasure of hearing, who fronts a band that is sadly inconsistent in its material quality. The songs are often dull or blur together, and they have a style they rarely depart from. That said, Simons' voice is automatically the high point of any of them, her being able to shift from a straightforward, somewhat poppy voice to an articulated operatic one and down again to harder edged tone. She's basically the voice I would choose if I could to front a band. She also happens to be my mental image of a perfect-looking woman brought to life and one of my very few celebrity crushes but shhhhh

2. Sonja Kristina from progressive rock band Curved Air:

Posted Image

Curved Air never really got anywhere. They put out seven studio albums of varying quality, but never caught on. They shook up the prog rock scene of the 70's by first having a female lead (which was really weird for such a nerdy genre) and second using a fiddle alongside traditional rock instruments, and giving it the spotlight. A lot of their stuff is pretty dull to me, but they have two exceptional albums, and Kristina delivers the vocals in some strange mix of operatic, spoken word, whispered and almost sultry styles. I really haven't heard anything else like this band or anyone else that sounds like her, able to soar through a ballad or seductively croon through a ten minute epic. Also she's one of my 14 followers on twitter which is pretty sweet.

So yeah I really wanted there to be more, and Amy Lee of Evanescence aswell as Tarja Turunen were both considerations but in the end it was really just these two that got to me the most. I don't expect many to know who they are though lol

Posted by The Xinlo , Aug 19 2013 · 91 views

yeah look: CLICK THIS

As my good friend takal likes to point out, it is an odd looking ship, but anyone familiar with the design of the Excelsior Class should see the resemblance :P

I've got a TOPIC for them aswell, with more pics and reference images.

[11:49:37 PM] Magical Wonderprince: man just got back from an awesome concert

[11:50:14 PM] Magical Wonderprince: a really top-notch band that covers a large selection of Canadian music

[11:51:17 PM] Magical Wonderprince: I was really looking forward to hearing Rush, The Guess Who and Shania Twain (for old time's sake) as they were all featured in the promotional video I saw before going.

[11:51:46 PM] Magical Wonderprince: and like the entire show happens and it's amazing but still none of them appeared until the very end where they said

[11:52:35 PM] Magical Wonderprince: "Okay now, this next band we can't possibly ignore. They're one of the most successful bands in Canadian history, and right now one of the biggest bands in the world. We can't leave without doing one of their songs..."

[11:52:45 PM] Magical Wonderprince: and I though wooooooooo Rush!

[11:52:59 PM] Magical Wonderprince: and then "Ladies and gentlemen, this band is called..."

[11:53:03 PM] Magical Wonderprince: "NICKELBACK!"

Stargate Complete Series Boxset

I just finihsed season one and am officially hooked on the show, and this box set is only $70... and I have $30 in gift card money too. Was going to buy a few more Voyager seasons with that money but this is such a deal (I mean Trek series collections are are generally $400, for only 7 seasons to boot).

Should I do it?

Posted by The Xinlo , Aug 08 2013 · 139 views

Any fans lurking around here? I just started watching SG-1 (after years of curiosity I finally saw it on TV at the dentist lol). I've only seen six episodes at this point but I'm pretty much sold on it. The whole cast is just great. Even Hammond who seems like your typical american stereotype general turned out to be a cool dudebro.

well... hey BZP. It's been almost two months since I used this blog. jeez.
so uh, what's happening? A lot of the familiar faces around here seem to be gone as of late, so I'm not even sure anyone I know is still blogging here.
Not a whole lot's up with me except that I finally downloaded LDD and made an awesome (IMO) lego Excelsior Class starship which I intended to buy before realizing that service is no longer offered. :(
aside from that been playing Star Trek Online and just been all-around Trek obsessed recently. Rewatched some of DS9, all of Enterprise, and some of Voyager. and yeah nothing else really is new.
oh no wait I got into college for music too. lol I legitimately forgot about that. Gonna be starting in september as a bass player (switched from guitar two weeks before my audition).
so yeah, just figured I should update this thing a bit after two months.

My Crew

So yeah, I downloaded this game finally and it's been really great so far. Graphics are a bit less awesome than I expected but oh well. Anyway I just took screenshots and GIMP'd around with them and made some images, so here we are:

Here's my bridge crew so far, consisting of (left to right), Ensign Eyra Sar (Trill), Captain Thomas Nathan "Manatee" Xin (Human), Ensign R'Shee (Andorian), and Ensign Jhril (Andorian):

Posted Image

and here's my ship, the U.S.S. Nelson, NCC-93403, Miranda class variant:

Pic 4

Most likely will be upgrading ship class soon to something more practical like a Constitution refit or something, and equip more than two phaser banks and a torpedo launcher, but this one's served me well thus far.

so yeah fun stuff.
