It wasn't removed because it was "fragile":

 

The problem was NOT with purple pieces breaking. The problem was in colour consistency. TLG was unable to get purples to match across the different plastics they use for different types of pieces. ABS purple would come up as a different shade than PC purple, etc. This is why we only had a handful of mostly Technic pieces in Onepu/Electro/Nui-Jaga purple. TLG was unable to get the same shade of purple in pieces made of different plastics.

 

This is why when we got purple KK2 sets, the purple used on them was a new and different shade from the purple we all knew and loved. And this is also why when we got purple in the Exo-Force sets and the X-Pods, we had even more new purple shades. It was simply impossible to standardize the purple pallet across the plastic board.

Oh, I remember that now. That Kinda blasts my whole rant... But still, All those shades could make for some interesting MoCs...

I have also heard that on the knights bus kit (harry potter methinks) that set had varying shades of KK2 purple in it. The fact that the plastic starts out clear, and is filled with colored plasic makes consistency more of an issue. This is seen in other colors as well. Some pieces being more transparent than others.

 

Purple was abolished because they couldn't make a batch consistently anymore, plus cause its not a huge seller, like turquoise.
