Writing Again

So for gins and griggles (but actually for practice) I'm working on a full length screenplay. Because I figured it'd be easier to start from something I decided to write a Captain Marvel movie, because she's the best (this was back before they announced that they were actually make one). Much procrastinating later and I finished a beat sheet a couple weeks ago and am going to script.

This is the first script I've written since "Ghosts That We Knew" last August and kinda the first bit of fiction I've really worked on properly all year (been busy, okay?).

As such there's a lot running through my mind:

  • How do people talk?
  • Why do people not talk during some conversations?
  • What's a good snack to get from a bodega?
  • How do people leave conversations?
  • What does a nine-year-old sound like?
  • What is the proper use of CONTINUOUS in a slugline?
  • How do people say goodbye?
  • No, no, keep direction out of your action.
  • What is a conversation?
  • Oh god I'm taking forever to get to the inciting incident.
  • Hey look, this character's actually developing a voice!
  • Holy fish it's taking forever to write ten pages.
  • Is that a natural way to say someone's name?
  • How much description should I give of a location?
  • Man, I gotta read more scripts.

  • How do people talk?
  • Depends on where they're at, and what they're doing. People talk differently at a business conference than they do at a rave party.
  • Why do people not talk during some conversations?
  • Usually because they have nothing to contribute but want to listen to what the other people have to say anyway. Or the other people are talking so fast they can't get a word in edgewise. Or they don't feel like talking. Or they are scared of saying the wrong thing. Or they are there, waiting for someone else so they can talk about an unrelated point, but don't want to interrupt the conversation because they are nice.
  • What's a good snack to get from a bodega?
  • I have no idea. I take it those are in New York?
  • How do people leave conversations?
  • Thank You for the help, good bye?
  • What does a nine-year-old sound like?
  • Depends on the nine-year old. The most common variations are the narcisstic and entitled nine-year-old and the super-cute compliant nine-year old. There's also the nasty nine-year-old and the spoiled nine-year-old and the sad and traumatized nine-year-old.

Other than that, nine-year-old's voices tend to be higher pitched than their older counterparts.

  • What is the proper use of CONTINUOUS in a slugline?
  • No idea what this is. It sounds like a weird combination of calculus and baseball.
  • How do people say goodbye?
  • Depends on how long the goodbye is for. If it is just for a few minutes, bye will do. If it's a long time, there might be embraces and tears.
  • What is a conversation?
  • Two or more people talking to each other. Usually just two - three or more people talking stretches suspension of disbelief IRL, unless it's a formal thing like a business meeting.
  • Oh god I'm taking forever to get to the inciting incident.
  • Happens to me all the time. You're not alone.
  • Hey look, this character's actually developing a voice!
  • Same dealio. They always surprise you, don't they?
  • Holy fish it's taking forever to write ten pages.
  • Always.
  • Is that a natural way to say someone's name?
  • Does it have to be? Would the character say it that way, even if it's not so natural?
  • How much description should I give of a location?
  • As much as you need to set the stage for it when you film it, right?
  • Man, I gotta read more scripts.
  • Your call.

Why are you responding to that list, fishers?

I have no idea.
