Art is anything not required for survival.

Wrack'n'Ruin seems to be on to something there. The problem with my speculation was that "aesthetically pleasing" is rather vaguely defined. What is aesthetically pleasing? Something that provokes the senses, mind or emotions in a desired way is a better description.

 

Bartender's answer is interesting and I have of course thought of it before because it can always be applied to art and it's hard to find any exceptions, but on some deeper intuitive level it doesn't quite ring true to me. I can't provide a argument against it, except that I like Wrack'n'Ruin's answer better.

 

By the way, I'm not getting the reference that several people are making. Where's it from?
