Logan > Dark Knight

Jean Valjean

:kaukau: Sure, Dark Knight was really gritty. But it was pompous and pretentious. It was really annoying, and had terrible editing. It's considered the best comic film of all time due to a really, really good performance, but I don't think that it makes the movie itself perfect. It has some huge flaws with the story. It feels pretty incomplete. And ultimately, it takes itself so seriously and sees itself as such a relevant film when in reality it doesn't have much of a human element. You don't look back on the film and think "That was such a powerful personal story of a man who dressed up as a bat." Even its "darkness" is pretty muted, because it's PG-13, and the film was still pretty idealistic.

Someone compared Logan to The Dark Knight, and I thought...just no. The Dark Knight isn't worthy of that comparison. And it does Logan a dishonor to be compared to it, because it isn't like The Dark Knight, and what it is is so much more. I actually really cared about the characters in that film. I actually cared about the story. It was relatable, and actually made you think about life. And if you watched Logan in black and white, you'll notice that it has better cinematography and editing as well.

When it comes to making comic book films that transcend the genre and no longer feel like comic book films, I'd hold Logan to be the standard-bearer, not The Dark Knight. That's the type of storytelling that I'd want to see.

(And while I'm at it, The Dark Knight might only be my sixth favorite Batman film. If saying that I preferred Logan didn't get the fans riled up, certainly saying that it's in the lower half of the Batman movies will definitely do the job.)

sixth favorite Batman film.

.... hold on a minute, let refresh myself. Out of all the good batman films, you have.... Batman Begins, The Dark Knight Rises, Batman, Batman Returns, and The Adam West Batman. I..... suppose I could understand ranking The Dark Knight below all of these. Just please tell me you aren't ranking it below Batman Forever or Batman and Robin.

I prefer Batman Begins, and I've always felt like I was the only person who didn't get the hype of The Dark Knight. I feel validated by this post.

Don't forget LEGO Batman, Mask of the Phantasm, and (debatable but still) BvS.

You sure bet its debatable, In fact, I'll go on record as saying that I'd rather have bat nipples than whoever that Punisher ripoff was in Dawn of Injustice.

Dark Knight is my least favorite of the trilogy. I've also thought that Heath Ledger's performance as Joker is incredibly overrated. Yes, I said that! I'd honestly take Adam West era Joker over Dark Knight.

As far as Logan is concerned, I haven't seen it so I can't say for sure that Logan > Dark Knight, but I can definitely believe it is. Hugh Jackman is Wolverine as much as RDJ is Tony Stark.

:kaukau: I'd say that The Dark Knight is something like fifth or sixth.  I definitely put Adam West Batman, Batman, Batman ReturnsBatman Begins, and The Dark Knight Rises above it.  The one that isn't as good but I nonetheless like more than The Dark Knight is Batman & Robin, which is a guilty pleasure.  Arnold Schwartzeneggar is just so fun!

I debate whether or not to include Batman v Superman, and it sort of depends on my mood whether I'd place that above The Dark Knight, although I'd probably put The Dark Knight above it most days.
