Black Panther, in brief

Jean Valjean

:kaukau: Saw it earlier than I thought I would. It's pretty good. Its villain is better than the usual MCU villain, but that isn't saying much. It is far and away the thinking-est MCU movie, but again, that isn't saying much. The movie is visually distinct, but also doesn't have the most memorable action. Good story. I liked the side characters. Lots of great female characters. I liked the bald ladies, although they're so tough that I'm surprised that T'Challa was the only person who technically had powers. Music is more noteworthy than most MCU scores, but not quite memorable. Could have been Hans Zimmer! Oh well. The CGI animals were in the uncanny valley territory, and there were times when I didn't understand why they had to be CGI when they were just standing there in their pens. Disney, didn't you learn from Tarkin? Speaking of which, Supreme Leader Snoke was a waste in this movie. Themes were pretty solid, and emphasized the moral journey that heroes go through, which not all MCU movies have been doing lately.

Overall, I'd say that it's one of Marvel's better films. I can understand why people are saying that it's the best one yet, because it belongs in that conversation. I don't know if it's the best one yet for me, personally. It certainly had a good story. I'll have to give this one some time to see if it's one of the best, because while I didn't walk out in awe and completely surrendered to the moment, I did walk out artistically satisfied in ways that other Marvel films haven't, so it could have that longevity with me.

In other news, I really loved American skier Elizabeth Swaney, who skied for Hungary in the women's halfpipe. She doesn't have the same skill levels, but she has a lot of determination and positive spirit, and she was an inspiration for me, and hopefully for the women of Hungary.

I did feel like the action was a bit lacking compared to some of the other Marvel movies. The Korea sequences were amazing, but the finale didn't match up. That said, the women in this movie were amazing, and totally outshine T'Challa for the most part.

Say what you will about Andy Serkis, his motion capture performance here was great. So lifelike!
