iPhone 5

The audio jack is on the bottom... why? Just... why?

Also a big "why" to the entire phone. Admittedly I've never been a fan of Apple products, but I can readily admit that up through the iPhone 4 they had a really good product lineup. But the 4s and 5 have just been sad offerings, and people just lap it up. I recommend everyone look up the segment Jimmy Fallon did on the iPhone 5 and then explain it to me in a way that makes western culture not seem terrible.

I think it's primarily because people don't think of phones the same way as they do computers, which is really rather derpy because at this point a smartphone is a condensed down version of a laptop. They're more powerful than my dinosaur of a desktop actually. So when someone sees Apple, they automatically think "oh, they did the first smartphone, they must be the best."

It's the problem with Apple. They make great innovations, but then afterwards slowly stop evolving technology and just making updates to the same old thing. But they can get away with it because it takes people a while to realize no, their products are failing and not actually that magical anymore.

Give it a generation or two more, it'll stop being used a benchmark.

People have been saying that for a while now =P.

Not that it can't happen, obviously, but at some point you have a lesser of two evils thing going on. Is the iPhone perhaps all it could be? Not necessarily. Is it a better offering than most other things on the market? Pretty much.

I use an iPhone because it fits my needs best. I got an iPhone 4 two years ago, so I was eligible for an upgrade to an iPhone 5, whenever that will ship. I don't begrudge people buying other phones, but usability is one thing Apple generally has going for them with these products (not so much computers, but a different issue entirely). Apps and features aside, the iPhone has the best interface, and other smartphones do a poor job of imitating it.

As for the jack being moved to the bottom, well, I dunno. Thinking on how I handle my phone, it might be easier, or it might be totally and completely bizarre.

However, yes, people are terrible in general. We are guilty of always wanting the newest thing. Don't ever think Western culture doesn't have that fault.

I always place my devices in my pocket upside down (just natural hand movement), so having the jack on the bottom works better for me.

Cholie may have a point there; it seems like an odd decision to me too, but I wonder if that played a part in the decision to move the headphone slot.

Of course, the best idea would be to go back to the right angle headphone jacks, and stick it on the sides, but that can interfere with pockets too...

I concur. If you do it that way, when you pull your phone back out you can go straight to using it. There is no need to flip it around etc.
