It's A Mascot!

As A 'Rebel' Mascot For Ole Miss, Who's Better Than Admiral Ackbar?

By Mark Memmott

Let me say up front that I'm biased on this story.

My now 24-year-old son Matt was a huge Star Wars fan as a kid, and one character he particularly loved was Admiral Ackbar -- the Mon Calamari rebel commander who famously shouts "It's a trap!" in Return of the Jedi.

Matt's Admiral Ackbar action character was like a member of our family for several years back in the early '90s.

So hearing that some students at the University of Mississippi inadvertently started a movement to make Ackbar the school's mascot is bringing back fond memories for me -- and I, for one, like the idea.

As Morning Edition's Renee Montagne said this morning, Ackbar may be "pretty far out," but he is, after all, a rebel commander and that makes sense at Ole Miss.

Star Wars director George Lucas' Lucasfilm studios, by the way, has weighed in to say it's flattered by the possibility of Ackbar being the mascot -- though "it will be difficult for him to show up for the games!"

OK, so maybe it's just some college kids having some fun. But what about it?

What do you guys think? To me, it's a pretty awesome idea, and if Admiral Ackbar does become their new university mascot, I think that it would be amazing if my university changed their mascot from the Mountaineers to the EOU Tauntauns. It would totally work since we're in the mountains already and it'd be loads cooler than our current mascot....I mean, Tauntaun versus a mountaineer named "Monty":

Tauntaun wins in my mind. And imagine a Tauntaun galavanting around the sidelines at football and basketball games. That would be so awesome.

My School Is Kind Of Awesome

Posted by Nukaya , in Eclecticness Feb 26 2010 · 86 views
Since my school isn't cool enough to have actual bells that ring on the hour, at one point in time they went and purchased various recordings of songs played out in bells which are blasted from rooftop speakers from one building at the top of the hour.

Now, you would think that they would try to find more traditional songs that are normally played by bells as a substitute, but whoever is in charge of programming it found and plays bell versions of the Imperial March and the Star Wars main theme on a semi-regular basis. I think these two song choices makes up for any lack of coolness of my school not having actual bells.

Anyone else have wacky and quirky going-ons at their university or school or know of nearby schools that do? Also, we need more ideas and volunteers for the BrickFair mosaic project. We're closing in on 150 days and we'd like to start solidifying plans for it very soon.

On My Laptop....

Posted by Nukaya , in Eclecticness Feb 12 2010 · 50 views

I renamed a bunch of stuff. So, now:

My desktop is Hogwarts.
My recycling bin is Azkaban.
The "switch between windows" option that I never use is the Room of Requirement.
The internet is Diagon Alley.
AIM is the Floo Powder Network.
Microsoft Word is Flourish and Blotts.

I still need a name for iTunes and a few other things, but there's not many music-related locations I can find in the Harry Potter world

Track meet this weekend! And, we need more volunteers for the BrickFair Bionicle Mosaic!

Knee Socks Are Amazing

Posted by Nukaya , in Eclecticness Feb 10 2010 · 55 views

Instead of putting on sweatpants over their shorts like most people are prone to do when they're cold, I put on knee socks.

It actually worked really well. And I was warm for the rest of last night, so it was probably one of the best ideas of the night. Yay, knee socks!

It really does look like that mauve Christmas tree my mom had in the 90s....

Actually, no! It looks kind of like one of the rooms in the Palace of Versailles!

Oh my goodness, Louis XIV temporarily came back from the dead to re-decorate my sig. It all makes sense now.

Though, I didn't know he was bff with Nocturn. Then again, those French kings were a bit out there sometimes, and I'm sure that at one point or another, Nocturn would have been a valuable ally in some of those wars Louis fought....though, being a king does not mean skimping on grammar and forgetting to capitalize the h in "hail" and leaving out the period.

Then again, I suppose when you've been dead for nearly 300 years, you're bound to forget a bit about grammar.

"ḊṘ ẆḢȮ İṠ ______"

ChocolateFrogs, dream
I dreamt last night that for whatever reason, my phone number was given to every member on BZP and I was constantly getting flooded with calls that were all "FIX THE SERVER NOW, PLEASE", and while I appreciated these people asking so politely (albeit in a very loud and caps lock'd manner), I was like "uhhhhhh, I think you should be talking to Bink....or Black Six....or someone that is not me...."

Then, while wandering my universities' campus trying to answer all of these calls, I went back to my dorm, only to find that ChocolateFrogs had shown up with a few friends and decided to decorate every hall with massive amounts Dr. Who stuff. So, I went to my room and my roommates were standing there looking at our newly decorated door (mainly covered in hundreds of papers saying "DR. WHO IS ______" and were like "ok, so this guy came by and he was decorating the hall, and he kind of wanted to decorate inside the dorm as well because he claimed it would be a "great surprise", but we talked him out of it. Do you know him or anything?" I just looked at them in slight confusion and awkwardness, and then saw Ben out of the corner of my eye running down the hall towards the second floor, cackling madly while brandishing fistfuls of paper streamers.

And, in ALL of this, it never occurred to me just just turn off my phone.

Dr. Who is not a mosaic! Or maybe he is! I don't know! But in the mean time, check out this mosaic idea!

Dear Lady Gaga

Aka, Stefani Germanotta.

You should have stayed as you were, because holy goodness, the two songs that you wrote and sang for NYU's talent show a few years back are AMAZING. As much as I like to sing along to Just Dance and Poker Face while working on my homework, the fact that you can sing and play piano extraordinarily well, and write amazing songs are not talents that you see in people everyday.

In other words, as cool as your origami dress, bubble dress, and that glittery glass mask thing you wore in Poker Face might be, you were such an amazing musician before that. And, you were super pretty already! You didn't need to go and paint a lighting bolt on your face (besides, Harry Potter beat you to that one anyway, and his is permanent). Your EP, Red and Blue? Awesome. More stuff like that and the two songs from the NYU show, in the future, perhaps, please?

In other news, I have a paper rough draft due at midnight. Don't be like Nukaya kids, and accidentally procrastinate on one paper in order to get another paper finished. And, my scholarship for track got randomly upped to $1,000 a year, which I am so happy about, so a massive thank you to my coaches. Evidently I did something right during the meets and practices in the past year.

Sticks And Stones Can...

Nasal Strips

Posted by Nukaya , in Eclecticness Dec 24 2009 · 55 views

Wearing one makes me feel a bit like Galen Rupp.

I kind of want to go running now.

In other news, I've had two 14 hour work days in a row and a couple of 8-12 hour work days prior to that as extra help at Edible Arrangements. Even though the extra money will be awesome (paying off BrickFair!!!), everything hurts and I'm paying the price for it via sore throat and stuffed up nose. Woo hoo!
