Soap Box Derby Lego Mosaic

So this is a mosaic that I made in either 2003 or 2004 that I had sort of forgotten about until I was talking with ChocolateFrogs a while back and he wanted to know what it looked like, and when I was cleaning my room, I found it peeking out from under a chair, so I dragged it out and got a picture of it. Looking at it now, there's a lot of things I think I might end up changing, like the shape of the bottom 1/3 of the shield part, the way the axles and front of the car have a very odd bend to them, the shape of the x, and how the red part of the shield isn't equal on both sides.

My reference photo (see below) that I was using while working on this was a 3"x 3" sticker (not so fun), but what I ended up doing was sketching out the basic outline of it onto the building plates using some sidewalk chalk, which worked really well. The entire mosaic is about 30"x 25". I don't know how many pieces are in it, especially as they're not all 1x1 pieces. Took a lot of digging through many LEGO-filled Tupperware containers to get enough of the darker grey pieces, though, which is sad, seeming as there's only six of them in the entire mosaic.

Please also note the wonders of my dad's old LEGO Bricks which has caused the varying shades of yellow that some of the white pieces have acquired. It just screams vintage.

I designed it based on the logo used by the All-American Soap Box Derby. More to come on soap box derby racing later, as it needs a blog entry on its own.

So, yay! Comments, critiques, anything? I want to do more, but it might make my mom give me that exasperated look if I tell her that I need to move a bunch of LEGO boxes into my room. And I'm not really sure what I'd do next, design-wise, but I really love making LEGO mosaics. They're fun.

I like it. I like it very much. I can, in fact, see nothing wrong with it at all. Perhaps that's just because I never build mosaics in System, though...

The Lego geek in me is screaming for you to arrange all the faded bricks so you have a gradient from tannish to white.

Oh man, I totally should!

YES DO THAT. Regardless, it's still very awesome as it is; I think that the faded bricks being interspersed everywhere gives it a sort of marbled look, which is a nice touch.

Pretty darn good.

Did the mosaics at BFest inspire you to like mosaics or did ya already like them?

I think I might have seen some mosaics that were featured in the LEGO magazine at one point in time, but seeing some of those ones at BrickFest this year have added to the inspiration as well!
