Mosaic Of Epic Proportions

If you've looked at D2: The Mighty "ChocolateFrogs" Duck's blog, he had this really awesome entry about a mosaic that was made during a LEGO con that happened in Britain right at the same time that BrickCon was occurring. I think this would be a phenomenal thing if we could pull this together at BrickFair 2010. I think the current plan would be to maybe get people who have confirmed that they're going to BrickFair 2010 to each make a pre-assigned square or two of it (as in a 32x32 LEGO plate) and then bring it to BrickFair. How we're going to organize it, currently no completely hammered-out plan (and we should probably get this ok'd with someone at BrickFair?) but if we can pull this off, it would be six types of awesome.

The thing is, is that CF and I are having a problem finding a program to use to "translate" the photo into a LEGO-piece mosaic version. We've found a few. One works great, except it doesn't tell you how many of each colour piece is required. I've found a few cross-stitch patter converters, but they way that they translate the image isn't very visually appealing. So, if anyone could give us a hand figuring that out, we'd both be extremely grateful, because I've been scouring google for something and have had very little luck.

(I just realized that there's been a miniscule speck of graphite stuck to the bottom of my mouse, and now there's this massive grey scribble on my desk. Oops.)

Oh, and does anyone know what happens when your Premier Membership runs out but you changed your name during that time as a Premier, and you're going to renew your Premier Membership? Does it revert the name change back to 90 days, but then switches back to 45 days once you renew it?

(and 304 days until BrickFair!)

Were you able to download PicToBrick or not?

I am still unable to get PicToBrick to download onto my computer, which is unfortunate.

I can't find the right Linux links to DL it (.deb is better than using Wine). Plus, it looks like I need to download some sort of Java thing first...?

I've also contacted Flickrite Dr. Sinister, who posted the pix, asking for info on who to contact who made the original LSW mosaic you see, and he said he'll have to see if he'll be allowed to give me the info.

Yeah, we should talk to the Other organizer. Oh, wait, that's you.

If we can pull it off, I will give this my full support.

I'm pretty sure it would stay at 45 days, since that's when you got it changed. Dunno though.

I really wish this is able to get off the ground and works, it would be absolutely amazing, especially if many peoples pitch in for it from around the place.

Well the original idea was of this, but that's a cool idea too that crossed my mind. Really though, it depends on what's practical, and with even a simple 10x5 grid it's kind of expensive.

I think the plan (or at least what I'm thinking would work) is that we would assign different squares of the mosaic to different people who had confirmed that they would be able to attend. Each person would get sent a grid with where each colour they would need would go for each square (i.e., I would complete square 1A and 1B, you would complete square 1C and 1D, and so on and so forth). Then, they would bring it to BrickFair, with a paper taped on the back saying what letter and number their square is, and we would assemble it there at BrickFair. After BrickFair is over, each person would take the square that they completed back home with them.

That's why I also think limiting the colours to red, yellow, blue, black, and white for it would be best, as those will be the colours that people will probably have the most of. As cool as it would be to harness all the colours that LEGO makes for bricks, some people won't want to or can't afford to spend the money on going out to get a bunch of brick colours just for this one specific mosaic. Looking at a few mosaics I've found, it looks like a lot of LEGO mosaic-makers do limit it to those five colours, and when you look at the mosaic, those five colours will "blend" together to make the other missing colours.

This, at least in my mind, would be the best, as it would make it so anyone who is attending BrickFair who has a 32x32 plate lying around and a bucket of those five coloured bricks that wants to participate in this, can. We won't have to worry about trying to raise money to buy enough bricks and plates (because I shudder at how much that would cost), and I think it would make so the community is involved even more, which is an awesome thing, especially if we do pull this off.

I think when I go home for Thanksgiving Break, I'm going to raid the garage and find as many plates as I can, and then lay them out in our driveway and see how it looks from the second story window, just to get an idea of how big it would be if it's a 10x5 grid (I think I'll also get a proper entry for the mosaic up as well. I think we need to hammer out the details a bit more, though).

I can totally understand the 5 color limit, and I like that I can grab a lot from my own collection, but if we're doing all 6 Toa Mata, I worry about colors like Tahu's orange, Lewa's lime green, and Pohatu all together. While colors will "blend," it's just not that easy to make brown at that scale looking at it semi-closely. Maybe another image should be picked?

(The half Mata Nui island half red Hau?)

But other than that, yes, 32x32 baseplates are probably most practical since everyone else has those.

ACK! I just realized this is technically a double post even though I'm replying to you...oops.

Lol, I'll just move that post up to this one and delete the other. Problem solved!

In regards to the colours, this one of the Toa only has the five colours. Pohatu's brown and Tahu's orange come out ok, but Lewa's green is a little bit iffy, so if anything, we'd probably have to add green to the colours just to make it look nicer.

It's funny that you mentioned maybe using the half Mata Nui island half red Hau photo, because yesterday I put the plain island picture in to see how it would look. Here it is with only five colours and here it is with green and orange pieces added in as well. I think both work quite well (and it's seven plates across....not sure what the height is yet), and I was going to try putting the half island half Hau one in, but I can't seem to find a photo of it right now. I think I like the idea of using the half island half Hau photo more than just using a photo only showing the island.

OK so for anyone reading this we've overcome a few bumps (like my thoughts on colors and any issues with images) and right now we're looking for a good quality image of the Hau/Island of Mata Nui to use. (Better yet, if you have one in red...)

This is the one I currently have saved on my computer. Yay for downloading all those picts from the 01 website contest! Anyway, there might be a bit much black around it, so there's always this one but that may just suffer from having too many colors. Not knowing what you used to convert them, I'll leave that up to you.

Anyway, even though there's not a great chance of me going next year, I wouldn't mind making a plate or two and sending it in. This looks like a cool project.

I'm loving this idea! Be sure to add me to the list of people to make tiles. :D

I'll try to shoot for BrickFair '10, and even if I can't make it, I can always mail my tile/tiles to EW.

Nah, the black around it is fine. It'll make everything else stand out. (However, that pic is kinda fuzzy to the island's right.)
