The Mysteries Of Harris Burdick

I love Chris Van Allsburg's books and illustrations so much, hence the new side links. I'm starting to work on my final for my drawing class right now, and I realized that I wish I could try to incorporate some of his drawing style into my own work. It has such a dream-like feel to it, while also appearing so realistic, and I think it might help the overall look of this drawing.

And, I'm not really sure what has triggered this newfound desire to rediscover all the books I grew up reading as a kid, but it's been quite nice. Steven Kellogg, Tomie dePaola, Shel Silverstein, Janell Cannon, Peggy Rathman, David Wiesner, Stephen Gammell, Laura Ingalls Wilder....I could go on listing authors for ages (especially the amount of ones who have created Newberry award or Caldecott award-winning books). See what happens when you're the daughter of a elementary school teacher? It's kind of wonderful, I think.

Anyone have any favourite authors or books that they read as a kid?

Art: Life study painting. About seven hours total scattered over the course of two nonconsecutive classes. I'm really pleased with it, especially with how the portrait turned out.

What is the painting about? :???:

It wasn't really about anything. We were doing paintings from live models, and this one turned out the best for me.

A few of my childhood and early-teen-years favourites:

- Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick

- anything by Gordon Korman (esp. No More Dead Dogs, The Twinkie Squad, Son of Interflux, Don't Care High, and the Bruno and Boots series)

- the Wayside School books by Louis Sachar

- anything by Gary Paulsen (esp. Hatchet and its sequels)

- The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams

- The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain

- Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson

- and the immortal, inimitable Roald Dahl! :D
