Dear house,

Ok, I'll accept that you were built some time around 1903. It makes you very awesome and cool-looking and all Victorian-era-y, but oh my goodness for the love of everything, why are you not more insulated. I think it's warmer outside than in my room right now, so I guess that sleeping outside on the porch might be slightly better, but that would involve a lot of things being moved outside, and for all I know, I'll get eaten by mountain lions or something, because this is the middle of nowhere part of Oregon and that totally happens on a regular basis.

And yes, I know I could turn the heater on, but the lack of insulation/gaping cracks in all the doors would probably mean most of the heat would go outside anyway. Plus, I am a college student looking for any way to save money, and no heat in the house during the winter in order to keep down the bills was kind of something I grew up with (thanks Mom!), so for the time being, fingerless gloves and way too many clothing layers will be the norm.

(it's also kind of sad that it's not even remotely winter here yet, and this house is this cold already)

I also need more gummy bears and graham crackers and sour patch kids and maybe pizza and someone to cuddle with and maybe orange-mango juice and possibly more seasons of How I Met Your Mother and Scrubs.

Layers of clothing also helps. Kinda the reverse of what I had to deal with in the dorms, which were like freakin saunas year round. But too cold sucks too. :(

Edit: I'm just going to shut up now

Aw man, I just love ending the day with someone saying that it's ok if I randomly get eaten by a mountain lion, regardless if they're joking or not. -Nukaya

Our house certainly isn't as old as yours, but we did have quite drafty windows until recently. Nothing to the extent of what you seem to have, but I know it sucks when the heat just seems to slip out the window. :|

One way to conserve power and contain heat is to get plastic insulation film from the neighborhood hardware store. Costs like $10 a roll, but that roll should be enough to cover a few windows. The idea is to keep air from flowing through and to keep warm air in. We used it last winter at my house and it worked quite well, I was impressed!

So yeah, you might benefit from that, too. Also, caulk for clack-sealing. Just sayin.

And should I initiate my hike to The Big to give you chocolate and hugs now? :3

Man, I know what you mean. My house isn't nearly as old, but it's been getting quite chilly at night. I can't bring myself to turn the heat on yet. So more blankets on the bed it is!

Mountain lions suck; we have them where I grew up. Our neighbor once saw one take down a deer in her backyard - that certainly makes you want to let your kids play outside.

Brrr... I know what you mean. I'm in the same general area as you, and my room is FREEZING!

Of course, it would help if my windows weren't so thin...or huge...and I were closer to a heat source...

And, of course, one of our wood stoves is broken...

Please avoid being consumed by ravenous predators! Buy a thermal blanket or something. They sell those in wal-marts now, f'real! Or have you looked into space heaters? I've heard they've made considerable advancement in the not-burning-your-house-down-if-left-on territory (although we used to leave the old-fashioned kinds on all night without any fires in my family, when we were too poor to afford heat...we lived dangerously!!).

Unfortunately, those are two things that I could easily access if I was at home. Totally didn't think about those while packing, but at the same time, I'll realllllly need them while at home for winter break. But maybe I'll take them back here after winter break? We'll see. -Nukaya
