Mafia Brainstorming

-Toa Lhikevikk-

Well, I'm good old-fashioned -Toa Lhikevikk- again.

So, in light of Ziko's recent proclamation that all Mafia games be Bionicle- or Lego-related in more than name to stay in G&T, I'm using this entry to let us get together to brainstorm a Mafia game with heavy Bionicle content.

Well, if we go with the Pyro role for more than just Cult, then we could call them Fire Toa.

The main problem we'll run into, is that there's simply no way to rename every single role to have a Bionicle twist; the Mafia, while it could be the Brotherhood of Makuta, would then run into a problem, when there's a similar-yet-different group in another game, which is the Cult.

Then there's the Vigilante, Doctor, and Detective. We could say the last two involve the masks of Healing and that mask Helryx wore in the serials, but would it make total sense? Or if there's other, secret roles, that might not be able to fully translate to fully Bionicle. =/

It might be able to work, I'm just trying to say that it'll be tough. =P

What about the Dark Hunters for the Mafia? And the Godfather could be The Shadowed One, which is more of a title than an actual name for our beloved passive-aggressive leader of thieves.

The one thing I've always thought about when considering if I'd ever host a game, is that there ought to be some kind of logic towards each round. By that I mean that it would help if there were some kinds of clues. Something that leads towards the killer instead of villagers having to take a complete shot in the dark.

However, I realise that this comes with some flaws, such as how much work the game master would have to put in. They would essentially have to end up writing an entire novel by the end of it, given each character would have to have some kind of trait or habit that would make them identifiable. Not to mention that if one person manages to solve the riddle, the round is as good as over, because everyone would change their votes.

Hm...This might need consideration.

What I was trying to say was that the mafia games' Lego references were too sparse, and then calling a single item in a game by a Lego name isn't enough. The "more than just names" was meant as a reference to each game's single Lego aspect, but I see where that wasn't clear.

So the issue was that the only Lego inspiration in either game was a title for an otherwise non-Lego feature. One was called "Bionicle" in title, but had no mention of Bionicle anywhere else and was set in what seems to be a normal city. The other didn't have a Lego-related title and was taking in roles from TF2--the only partially Lego aspect of that was the cult being named after Hapori Dume.

I think one of the best places to bring in Lego would be the "scene" posts (the rest of the discussion between members probably isn't well-suited to being stuffed with Lego references), which could really bring the game into some Lego world. You don't necessarily have to change the names of roles, especially the classic mafia roles, but it could help bring in more Lego--for instance, calling the villagers Matoran and setting the game on Mata Nui could effectively make the scenes much more Bionicle-y.

Using a Lego theme other than Bionicle could also give you more freedom in making roles; themes like Adventurers or City could bring in Lego features without making you integrate something like mask powers into a role. Of course, if you did something like that, you'd need to be sure not to just have, say, a Lego City game title and nothing else--you'd need to reference bricks, sets, official characters, or something in scenes.

And I guess I might as well throw this out there--saying that a TF2 mafia belongs in COT isn't supposed to be a threat. I'm just saying that it doesn't work with G&T's Lego rules. It's fine if you want to play a TF2 mafia, and now that Than's been more active, you could probably get one approved more quickly than before.

Hopefully that helps clear things up a little? If not, I'd be happy to answer any questions you have and explain anything else that wasn't clear.

Actually, there were a couple other aspects, such as the masks. It might not have been something one would necessarily make the connection to initially, given Hat Fortress, but it was indeed there, and I believe there were some mentions to Matoran and Toa. I could be wrong on the latter part, though. xD

Well, in that respect, technically all these are supposed to be in Metrus, like on Metru Nui, but that's one huge dome, considering there's like 40 of them so far. xD Maybe an idea would be to make mention of the chutes or forges and such, to make it show that it takes place in a Metru Nui of sorts(Just, BZ Metru, instead of the official location, so that oddities like, say, Male Toa of Lightning or so can just be handwaved. ;)).

But it does clear up a few things, yes. Thanks Ziko. =D

Yeah, mentioning parts of the BZ Metru (or wherever) setting would be good. You're right in saying that the connections with Lego don't always make it across to us; even though the city might be Lego and the characters Bionicle species, those connections aren't always easy to see, especially if it becomes more of an unspoken piece of knowledge after several mafia games.

Taking away the ambiguity by referencing locations or Bionicle species more consistently would probably be enough of a change.

Similarly, the Police Officer could be the village/metru's resident Toa, a la Lhikan or Jovan. One of the main differences between Bionicle and Mafia games would be the justice system; it seems most Bionicle villains were either imprisoned without trial or killed (without trial). Alternatively, they could be the Vahki, and the Vigilante would be the Toa.

Another suggestion for Detective is that they wear not Masks of Psychometry (which would be handy, but would perhaps not tell others' roles), but they would wear Masks of Truth to judge what a villager was hiding.

Although there's one major roadblock, at least concerning disbelief suspension: Toa, Matoran, different Kanohi, Dark Hunters, Vahki, and others are all very visually separate, and you'd think other players would immediately notice other players' types (and therefore, roles). Unless everyone is a Matoran, or disguised as such. The Dark Hunters could have half the villagers working for them, the Toa could wear a Mask of Illusion, et cetera, et cetera.

The best part of a move to Bionicle is the possibility for very awesome death scenes. There are so many imaginative ways to off someone in Bionicle; this includes all the regular killing method s of the Mafia and more.
