The Line That Never Went Anywhere (Even Though It Should Have)

Posted by Octodad , Aug 09 2014 · 233 views

In Mask of Light, there is one line spoken by Makuta that seems like it sets up a mystery. He says, "Sleep spares him [Mata Nui] pain. Awake, he suffers."

That's interesting. Nobody ever thought there could be a reason for Makuta to put him to sleep besides a power grab. What pain does sleep spare him? What else happened to Mata Nui to cause this pain?

But nothing happened. Nobody ever alluded to that line, no pain of the sort mentioned comes up. (I suppose Mata Nui's worsening condition could count, but that wouldn't make much sense for him to allude to, especially since he was dying BECAUSE he was put to sleep iirc.) They slapped that mystery on the table and future story turned its nose up like someone had just cracked a rotten egg there.

If bonesiii was asked about this line, he'd almost certainly handwave is as "makuta lies" (and if he sees me call that handwaving he will almost certainly give me a diatribe about how it's a fallacy to call it handwaving because he cannot be wrong) and if you asked greg, he probably wouldn't even remember the line, and likely either say makuta lies, or even strike it from canon. Which would make sense, because canon did jack diddly squat with it anyway.

I wish they had done something with that line. That had the potential to pull Makuta from the depths of Angry Janitor With Lazily-Written Plans Land and maybe even dropped him into the Domain of Interesting Characters.

But they didn't. Oh, dear.

A Suggested Fix for Queen Beast

Posted by Octodad , Aug 06 2014 · 89 views

Okay, so Queen Beast has her little butt cocoon, right? The instructions tell you to attach it like this:

Posted Image

That looks OK, but it can be better than OK. That's kinda gappy, and hangs low compared to the rest of her body. How do we fix this? Simple! We just turn the socket 180 degrees.

Posted Image

Voila! The cocoon now presses snugly against the armor on the body and creates a nice bodily flow. The cocoon has sufficient force closing it that whatever you put in her butt won't fall out even with the slight downward angle. It's an easy fix with no extra pieces.

Still doesn't solve her long torso, weird front legs, or weird wings, but it's a start.

a quick WIP

After the T. rex skeleton thing, Izaak suggested I make a whole bunch of minifig-scale dino skeletons, so I started. I then put it on hold because it ended up being more difficult than I anticipated, and only just now got back to it, with the first almost-completed skeleton to show for it.

The white probably won't stick around; it makes it recognizable as bones, but fossils aren't white. They're brown, or tan, or some rocky color. The final version will probably be Brick Yellow, Sand Yellow, or Reddish Brown.

This, a Triceratops, and a small theropod originally intended to be a Velociraptor are all I have in progress so far, but also in planning is a Diplodocus and possibly an Allosaurus or similarly-sized theropod.

the final destination in mind for this is a Cuusoo project so there's an option out there for people who want decent-quality accurate dinosaur skeletons available.

Testimonials

Honestly, you can make this sound like some kind of crusade for justice all you want (I'm going to hope that some of how you worded it is just meant as hyperbole to make a point, though?), but it just comes across to me as being anti-fun and anti-imagination.

There's a time and a place for joke entries to place high in a contest (actually no there really isn't but w/e), but the first site-wide BZP contest is certainly not one of those times.

The first entry offended my eyes.

Well, this was probably in the bottom 3 comics I've read in my life. Didn't make much sense, and some things were hard to read because of the coloring and font style.
