T. rex skeleton

okay I promise you this isn't just more complaining about the T. rex skeleton from the lab set. Or, at least, not quite.

see, Izaak told me he would only consider my complaints valid if I could build a more accurate skeleton with a similar number of pieces. I was intending to do so anyway because I wanted to prove to myself that my claims weren't empty, but he fueled that fire. And so that's why I created this:

Now, it's not perfect, I'll admit that. I'm second-guessing the cheese slope on the neck, and the legs are somewhat rough and ill-proportioned. But this is, in my opinion, aesthetically better than the skeleton we received in the final set, while only using a few more pieces. The reason for more pieces is primarily because sadly, I could not preserve the tail build; it was simply too curved for this more horizontally-structured skeleton. However, slimming the skull helps make up for that. Also, while this image doesn't have the stand, that is only because I couldn't get the pieces to align right in LDD to make the stand work. Ideally, it would also have a chest stand for support.

idk, I can understand the draw of the original, I guess. It gives you that recolored piece, and it has its own sort of charm. It just annoys me with its wonky proportions that feel less like stylization and more like odd building choices.

You did do a good job. Very nice, even if certain limitations make the skull look a bit doofy.

I lso think the reason the skeleton is a bit odd is because the person who designed it is an isotope geochemist, not a paleontologist

that's why she should have chosen ME to design the skeleton :P

You're a paleontologist? :)

Not insofar as having a degree, but as far as taking a deeply scientific interest in dinosaurs and a critical eye towards portrayals of them, I'd like to think of myself as an amateur paleontologist.

"amateur." jess is the single most educated person I know WRT prehistoric reptilian life

also i will def be using that skeleton design when i pick up this set

Interesting! If I may nitpick one thing, it looks like you used either Light Grey or Light Stone Grey to build this, but both of those colors are discontinued. I'm guessing you meant to use Medium Stone Grey (Light Bluish Gray on Bricklink and other AFOL sites)

Actually, I used white! I changed the background color to brown to help avoid the white blending in but what that ended up doing was reflecting it all onto the white and muddying it.

I'd actually prefer if it were tan or even dark brown because either of those would be more accurate to actual fossils than white, but I understand TLG's desire to make it recognizably bone-colored.

Wow, this is actually pretty cool. I agree it's not perfect, but it does look like an improvement over the original set design.  It looks like the structure has a better flow and it seems to be more realistic in my opinion.

The skull does look a bit dooflike, but it looks a lot better than the original.

I kinda wish the design could have more of a curve to it, and not just for the tail, but the spine as well.  Still, for a small build like this, I think it's pretty solid.
