It's Walt Disney Animation Studios so I have been following it since it was announced, like, two years ago.

Aside from being inspired by Polynesian cultural elements I'm not so sure there will be many similarities between the two. It will, if I recall correctly from one promo image, involve encounters with Gods which look to be elemental in nature, but that's about as far as it will go I think.

But I know as much about this movie as the general public does (which is not much), so who knows. I could be completely wrong.

"To save her island, she must collect six masks of power, that give her strength, speed... x-ray vision??  What now, is that something the Polynesians were on about?"

 

Although that was a very cool video, seems like it'll be a fun movie.

 

The plot synopsis on the Disney Wiki says she must "prove herself a master wayfinder." I didn't realize that the term from Treespeak was Polynesian in origin.

 

It's different enough that I don't suppose it will literally be BIONICLE: Disney Edition outright but it should be really interesting looking for parallels as more about the story comes out.
