The Forbidden Game
... and like a butterfly to another sweet-smelling flower, I jump from The Red Pyramid to another fantastic book that was started and completed within twelve hours. This time, though, it was three long books in one -- and in a way, as creepy as all three Stephen King books I've read.
The Forbidden Game books, written by L.J. Smith (the person who wrote The Vampire Diaries, in case you cared to know), center around seven friends who play a game at a birthday party for one of them. The game -- purchased earlier that day by the main protagenist, Jenny. They get sucked into the Shadow World, where they are met by the area's master, a Shadow Man named Julian -- who, incidentally, has been madly in love with Jenny since she was five, in a case of Hades and Peresphone fatal attraction.
The books are scary, especially when one of the main characters gets killed trying to face their worst nightmare, but Shadow Man Julian is crazy-awesome, especially when he interacts with Jenny and her boyfriend. His love for her actually reminds me of Galigee's stories -- you know, when Makuta kidnaps her and whatnot, saying he loves her when she's afraid of him for good reason? Got that impression.
Throw in references to Norse mythology, and it's a recipe for awesomeness. I recommend them highly.
