The Evolution of Doughjoy and Gingrdread

over one year ago, i posted my very first Fakemon: two gingerbread men named Doughjoy and Gingerdead(soon after renamed to Gingrdread). the original drawing was exceedingly horrible, but i continued to redesign and alter them over the course of 2013. today, i have finished what i believe to be the last version of the duo in the forseeable future, and in recognition of that, i thought it would be a good idea to look back and see how Doughjoy and Gingrdread have changed.

the original design

where it all began. as i said, this drawing is ridiculously bad, but it did establish several key elements that would carry over to all of the future iterations, such as:

  • Doughjoy evolves into a part-Dark type(originally Dark/Normal, later changed to Dark/Fairy)
  • Doughjoy has a heart shape on his chest, while Gingrdread has an "X"
  • instead of gumdrop buttons, Gingrdread has skulls
  • Gingrdread has large section missing from his head, as well as his hands

the second design(ingore the words and stuff(also i know i spelt "pastries" wrong okay))

apparently at the time of drawing this i thought it would be good for them to have eyes that were the size of Texas. their entire design was obviously refined in this image when conpared to the first one. it also introduced Gingrdread's eye scar.

the third design(ignore the words again)

...and in this version i must have thought it would be good for Doughjoy to look insanely creepy. aside from that, this drawing introduced their "gloves" and overall made them much lankier.

the fourth design(Gingrdread only)

speaking of lankiness, Gingrdread suddenly got extremely tall and thin in this version. i don't really like this one at all; it didn't keep in style with the previous versions, and he didn't really look that much like a gingerbread man anymore. this design was eventually scrapped, and was not used as a reference when drawing their most recent versions.

the final(?) design(non-colored)

the final(?) design(colored)

and here we are, over one year and three noteworthy drawings in the making, i give you the most recent, and what i believe to be the best, versions of Doughjoy and Gingrdread yet. the lines are cleaner, the proportions are better, and in the end it all comes together to make a more cohesive and believeable design. but i guess you never really know what the future holds, and thus they may be revisited once again, but for now i'm really happy with these, and i feel comfortable in calling them the finshed product.

it sounds weird, but Doughjoy and Gingrdread will always have a special place in my heart, and not just because they were my first Fakemon. to me, they sort of symbolize my growth as an artist. just comparing the first drawing to the most recent one, it's dramatic seeing how much better i've gotten, and during the time it's taken for me to get to the final designs, i've started digitaly coloring and manipulating images, things i had no idea how to do when i first created these two. i still might not be that great of an artist, but i'm sure as heck a lot better than i was one year ago, and i'm excited to see how i improve next year.

happy holidays from Joshua, AKA Squishy. =)

(Ha, for a second there I thought the title was talking about a new evolution to this family.) But this is great. I don't remember too well, but I don't think I commented when you first posted these since I wasn't really into Pokemon at the time.I did see them way back then and I remember thinking that they were pretty good concepts. I definitely think this progression and improvement is commendable, and the end product is great.

thanks guys! =) and you never know dotcom, maybe there could be a new evolution to this family in the future... but that would be MEGA strange. ;-)

(yeah ok that was not subtle at all)
