What Sets Are Good?

Based Goomy

Hey everyone, it's been a while.

I want to get back into MOCing with Bionicle parts and I feel I could use a few new sets. What modern sets have good pieces? I picked up Evo XL and I think that set is amazing

Is there anything else worth picking up?

Splitter Beast is a great parts pack, though its price per piece is downright pitiful compared to the mid-size sets like Flyer Beast vs. Breez. Still, two heads, two articulated hands, two each of the new large feet, small feet, and talons, and lots of other useful beams and shells. But of course, it also gets you a duplicate Evo mini-hero.

Furno Jet Machine is my favorite set from this year. However, it also has the fewest pieces of any of this year's mid-size sets (still more than any previous mid-size HF or BIONICLE sets, though), and I think it's an example of a set where the creative build is the primary draw. Several of its most useful parts are ones that you already have thanks to Evo XL Machine.

Flyer Beast vs. Breez is a great set in its own right. While fairly skeletal, it has the best price-per-piece of any of the mid-size sets this year. Four large tail/tusk pieces, two large feet, four talons, and four Medium Azur beams.

If you expand your search to include last year's sets (which might still be in some stores), Dragon Bolt is amazingly fun and chock-full of useful parts — though several of those are parts you already have thanks to Evo XL Machine, and you also get the not-terribly-versatile brain and faceplate. Still, quite a nice set for either parts or play value.

Overall, it's hard for me to think of suggestions as far as parts are concerned. Even in the days of BIONICLE, I can't think of many sets that were great as parts packs for someone just starting out, except perhaps large $30+ sets like Vezon & Fenrakk, or the bulk parts buckets which were used to clear out overstock from previous waves of sets.

Then again, you're not really just starting out. You presumably have plenty of BIONICLE parts at your disposal. It's hard for me to say which Hero Factory parts would be most useful in conjunction with those because I don't do much mixing of building styles — most of my Hero Factory MOCs stick pretty strictly to parts used in the past five years, only borrowing earlier parts like Throwbot feet on rare occasion. And your building style seems different than what mine was like even when I was working chiefly with BIONICLE parts. Throw Hero Factory parts into the mix and it could change dramatically — there's no telling which parts might become most useful to your creations then.
