It’s reigning Twilight Sparkle!

[censored] can exclusively reveal that the third season finale of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic will see everyone’s favorite unicorn being named a princess — and gaining a new pair of regal wings in the process. “She was set up from the very beginning to be on an important journey,” explains MLP head writer Meghan McCarthy. “It’s really about her earning this new status by combining all the things that we’ve seen her learn over the course of the series.”

But don’t worry, Pony fans — though Twilight will undergo a physical transformation, her personality will remain the same. “What we didn’t want to do was change who she is as a character, because she’s certainly someone that everyone’s proud to know and love,” McCarthy says. “I don’t think becoming a princess really changes her; I think it’s going to introduce some new challenges for her.”

Those challenges will include living up to that lofty new title. In MLP‘s Equestria, “princess” is a designation that’s earned, not freely given — and though princesses have specific leadership roles in pony society, being one really means “being a good pony who shares the gifts that they have been given with others,” according to McCarthy. “We’re building a very unique mythology around being a princess,” she continues. “Every little girl wants to be a princess, and not everybody can get to be a princess — but you can live up to the ideals that should come along with being a princess.”

I'm done with this show.

I still don't get why it's a huge deal. she's not going to be OMG COMPLETELY DIFFERENT or anything.

it's like, based on some of the reactions thus far, I'd hate to see people try to watch a show with actual character development, because apparently they're incapable of handling change.

I agree, Bambi. I hadn't heard of this until you posted it, and even as somebody who isn't a brony and doesn't really consider himself a fan, I think it's pretty lame. The ponies were supposed to be ya-know, friends/together/a group/whatever? It seems like they are separating Twilight and making her super duper special, when really, they do better as a group of 6 friends.

I love some of these responses. Seriously, the animosity is hilarious, especially when you remember that it's all aimed at a kids show called My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.

Frankly, I wish people would wait until the actual episode airs before denouncing the show and deciding it's the worst idea ever. We don't even know where they're going with it.

Aye. They could have taken someone else and made them a princess. I mean, how will it work with the mane six now? :P Two earth ponies, two pegasi, one unicorn and one alicorn.

And by the way, I'm not actually not done with the show- I'm still going to watch it until the end. But it has been bumped down on my favorites list.

If they had taken someone else and made them a princess, it would have been meaningless, because it would have just been a random event that only circumstantially involves the Mane Six. As it is, they're not just abruptly changing Twilight. As far as I can figure this is meant to be another stage in her character development.

Frankly, if the characters in the show were completely static and unchanging, the show wouldn't be nearly as compelling. And while most of them don't have any physical change to go along with the personality developments, that doesn't mean that such a thing should be out of the question.

Twilight's always been given higher importance than the others in the Mane Six, in a sense. She's been Princess Celestia's student, for crying out loud, not to mention the bearer of the Element of Magic which basically represents the power of friendship itself (and in charge of organizing the Winter Wrap Up in Ponyville, though that's obviously not as big a deal in the grand scheme of things). This is a change in appearance and responsibilities, though to be honest the Mane Six are already shouldering the burden of saving Equestria on a regular basis and Twilight more or less takes a leadership role in many of those missions, so more responsibility doesn't necessarily mean that much.

Overall I think the writers for the show can pull this off, and to be honest I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if it turned out this has been planned for a considerable amount of time, just like Mata Nui being a giant robot. So let's not declare the show ruined before anything even happens in it to ruin it-- especially not when it hasn't been two episodes since an episode you yourself loved

Oh no, I haven't declared it ruined. This time I'm just going to wait.

And assuming you're talking about Keep Calm, after watching it again I decided I don't like it after all.

This is the kind of mindset about princesses that I want my own kids to grow up with. Whether or not they want to be "princesses", I still feel that the message is important. So I'm cool with it. Also she's so adorable. <3

Nah, I was talking about the most recent one (Just for Sidekicks).

I think she looks cute. :3
Well, of course she looks cute. She's Twilight Sparkle. I shudder to think how much the writers and artists would have to deform her and derail her character for her NOT to look cute.

So they're taking an existing and popular character, giving her new powers and a few cosmetic updates, and re-releasing her to sell more toys? Seems familiar...

I was going to draw a bionicle comparison because that happened so many times.

Oi, I've already stated that I'm still watching. I don't think the show is ruined. I'm not saying the episode will be bad. I'm saying it'll be different, and I'd prefer her the old way.

On the other hand, this creates a number of potential storylines that can be explored in future episodes. Besides the obvious, like Rainbow Dash giving Twilight flying lessons, what if her friends also start to think of her differently, whether because of her rank or her new form, and she has to find a way to prove to them that she doesn't want her relationship with them to change? Or suppose we have an episode of her having to learn to balance her new royal responsibilities (whatever those might be) with spending time with her friends? Or an episode dealing with the difficult political side of being royalty?

Really where a lot of people see the potential for the show's status quo to be dramatically altered, I see a number of opportunities for Twilight to deal with that very issue in Season 4: finding ways to adjust to these big changes without hurting her friendships, which are just as important to her as they are to viewers of the show. We will be able to adjust to the new Twilight while Twilight and her friends attempt to deal with the same challenge.
