windows messenger was a crummy IM service but skype is about a hundred times worse. the only reason skype was ever used at all was because it was the first ubiquitous VOIP and video-calling client.

why anyone chooses to use it for textual IM, I'll never understand. it's an annoying, invasive, non-intuitive, resource-hogging, miserable shmuck of a program. skype is awful.

Simple: the people they know use Skype, so they start using Skype as well. Resulting in the people they know starting to use Skype as well.

And so the vicious cycle of godawful IM clients continues.

I like Skype, except for the god-awful emoticons. It's nice to be able to add calls or video calls to the ongoing chat without having to open a separate program. For instance, I was video calling someone just the other day. She was sick and had lost her voice, so while I could talk to her normally, she needed to type anything she wanted to say. It's also good for transferring files to someone mid-call.

No man, no. Why were their friends using it in the first place. Why would anyone use it. Skype is awful and dumb and people who use it for textual IM should re-examine their life choices.

It's like war, man. Nothing's ever gonna get better until someone stops. Don't do it just because others are.

All skype's got going for it is the video/call ubiquity but it's not even good at that.

Skype is the enemy.

See this guy gets it. This is a smart guy.

Skype massively slows down my computer every time I start it, their method of synching the logs is plain stupid, so I don't get to see what's been said in a group when I've been offline for a little until someone in there who's on my friendslist gets online, the filesending is slow, and I have just stopped bothering to click the 'X' on the advertisement since 3 seconds later another one just pops up. It's a godawful program, and a massive pain to use.

But sadly I have a job (read: volunteer job, which is kinda cool so why not) that requires me to stay in contact with my colleagues and superiors, and those superiors just happen to only use Skype and be stubborn enough to refuse to use anything else.

Luckily there are some better programs which let you connect to multiple different IM networks, including Skype, at once without actually needing the program to be open, so at least my computer doesn't take 5 centuries to start anymore.

But when it's either indirectly using Skype or being unable to do my job, then indirectly using Skype it is.

I still prefer AIM or just a nice ol' IRC chat, though.

Skype is so much better, I don't know why anybody uses AIM or WLM. .-.

Because they're just plain chat, without all the bulky videos and voice messages - some of us don't own, or want, or want to use, either a microphone or a webcam for digital contact.

Also, it's an incredibly resource-intensive program, causing everything to slow down. (Which is why I use a different client using the Skype API the talk with people on Skype without actually being on Skype)

Not to mention the interface for skype is the most obnoxious and least intuitive thing in computing history. I thought we'd finally gotten rid of resource-hogging, screen-hogging nightmare programs when AOL fell from public grace after the 90s.

Skype is the worst type of bloated, inelegant, frustrating mess. It makes me SO MAD.
