Writing...

~Shockwave~

I'm doing peer reviews and am just kinda staring at the screen with no idea what to say.

1. I'm in no position to give someone else writing advice, I can't even figure out my own essay.

2. The questions cover the most hard to pin down and pointless parts of the essay.

3. The advice my friend gave me of her own accord is significantly more helpful than this could hope to be.

4. Most of the stuff isn't going to be included until the final draft anyway.

Honestly the stuff seems to be there so my teacher doesn't have to work as hard while grading it. It's infuriating.

I have the exact same problem when peer reviewing. My writing has never been strong (especially when compared to the superior writing skills of my peers), so when I have to review the writing of others I have a hard time offering any criticism that isn't superficial. And it doesn't help that when I get my own papers back they are marked to high heaven with comments and suggestions.

But that's probably why teachers like to do it- so that we can sample the writings of others with the hope that we'll pick up some things and better our own. Not sure how well that worked for me, though.

Somewhat related aside: in my 'Writing in the Major' class, there were only actually four of us students. For this reason the professor decided it was a good idea for us to offer in-person criticism during classtime. We all hated it, and now we look back on it as a 'class in public shaming' because that's basically what we were doing the whole time. I'd take a traditional paper-mark-up over an in-person interrogation any day.
