About Bill

Posted by Stark , in Collection, Video Games Sep 30 2015 · 353 views

Let's talk about Bill. You might know a Bill in your life; chances are you know of many. Perhaps they go by 'William' or 'Will' or 'Billy' or something else entirely. Maybe you knew them very well, or maybe you didn't know them at all. I myself have known several. But I'm not talking about any Bill in real life.

I'm talking about Bill from a video game.

"But Tex," you say, "there are like a thousand different Bills in video games too, MORON"

Maybe. But how many of them are ducks?

This is Bill. Bill the Duck, from the Animal Crossing series. He's a jock, who is often self-absorbed and narcissistic, with just enough redeeming qualities to make getting to know him worthwhile. He was one of the characters featured on the cover of Animal Crossing for the Gamecube, as well as Animal Crossing: City Folk for the Wii. I did not play either of these games.

The only game in the series that I have played is the installment that was released for the DS: Animal Crossing: Wild World. It was given to me as a birthday present in 2009, only a few days before a big move from Winnipeg over to a town I despised at the time (and sometimes still do), where my family has lived ever since. The move itself was lackluster, and I was furious with my parents, with the world, with the military, with everything, because I did not want to leave Winnipeg. I was having a fantastic time, and it was being brutally cut short.

I am not kidding when I say that everything about that move went poorly for me. It took almost a month for me to find a proper friend that I could actually trust in the new town, and beyond that it wasn't until the next August where I began to encounter people, places, and experiences that started to make the move worth it. Recent discussions with both of my parents have revealed that neither of them was very happy about the move either, so I have gotten some six-years-late vindication. :P

I could talk about that all day, but let's get back to Bill.

Wild World was brand new when we were moving, and it was addicting. It was an escape from reality, a reality that was frustrating me without end. It was calm, it was relaxing, and it was fun. I spent a lot of time playing the game those first several months, as my town's population slowly shifted and grew around me.

The first villager to join my town was Bill. At first, I had a bit of trouble connecting with him. His attitude to start off was a bit standoffish, but I continued to interact with him anyway because the alternative was having Tom Nook inquiring about my next house payment. Bill warmed up to me rather quickly, and I slowly warmed up to him. Although his dialogue was often repeated (to the point where I could sometimes predict exactly what he was going to say), his easygoing nature revealed itself and it was always heartwarming to see him. Some of the other villagers came and went; others stayed put just like Bill. But none of them really connected with me like Bill did. He was the first, and the best. Every time I turned on the game, I sought him out, to see if there was anything he needed. I gave him presents whenever I could. Sometimes I just walked beside him as he wandered around town.

Eventually, I grew bored with the game. There's only so many times that I can keep myself focused and entertained with the same repetitive tasks, and while I liked Bill, he wasn't the same as a real person (nor would he ever be). So I started to slip away. First for weeks at a time, then months.

But every time I turned the game on, there was Bill. Waiting patiently, loyally. Heartbroken that I had vanished, and so happy that I had returned. It made turning the game back off rather sad, and as far as I know, he's still waiting for me in there, even now. I don't think I have even turned on the game in the past year.

I never really cared for any of the characters in Animal Crossing; none of them truly struck a chord with me.

Except Bill.

So when Nintendo announced the Animal Crossing amiibo card series... I hesitated. On the one hand... that's asking for too much. Over 100 cards in the first series alone (of which we know there will be at least one more) with 7 cards per pack, costing $6.99 per pack here in Canada. You don't know which cards you're getting. Collecting them all could become a nightmare.

But I saw Bill.

So I decided that I would buy three packs, hoping that my favorite villager would show up.

Bill must have been thinking the same thing, because he did.

Welcome back, Bill.

One of my brothers bought the first game and really enjoyed it so when he buys this one I'm going to steal it from him

Just until I've played through the game

After that he can have it back

Lego Worlds is on Sale

30% off on Steam right now

Here in Canada, that translates to $11.89 versus the usual $16.99.
AKA a price that is now making me strongly consider purchasing the game. Although I'm still not 100% sure I'd enjoy it or even have the time to play it, since Minecraft can't hold my attention for all that long these days either.

I also still need to play through the rest of Radiant Historia and then start Dragon Quest V, so...

Some new (old) RPGs

Posted by Stark , in Video Games Jul 31 2015 · 192 views

Just grabbed Dragon Quest V and Radiant Historia for DS off of Amazon, am now waiting for them to ship.

Man I've wanted Radiant Historia ever since it came out and I'm finally going to have it weeeee

As far as Dragon Quest V, it'll be my second DQ game (after Dragon Quest IX in 2010), so I'm looking forward to it. If I enjoy it, I'll try and pick up both IV and VI and then cry about the remakes for VII and VIII not being in NA.

Nintendo at E3

My thoughts:

Star Fox Zero - looks pretty fun. I imagine the Smash amiibo for Fox and Falco will both work with it in some fashion. I'm looking forward to trying it out.

Yo-Kai Watch - Haven't played anything in this series before, probably won't start now.

Super Mario Maker - Obviously I want this. Who doesn't? You can make your own Mario levels! Heck yeah! Also, that special 8-Bit Mario amiibo is amaaaaazing~
EDIT: oh god the amiibo has two different versions whyyyyy

Yoshi's Woolly World - The game is adorable, what more do you want? Those amiibo too

Hyrule Warriors Legends - What little I've played of Hyrule Warriors on Wii U was pretty fun. I doubt I'll pick this up but if my brother does I'll give it a go.

The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes - This one is a mixed bag. I LOVE A Link Between Worlds so it's pretty awesome to see its mechanics seemingly being re-used for a new title. However, I'm not sold on this game yet; the multiplayer focus might take away from the tightly focused gameplay of ALBTW.

Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival - So we finally have a game that requires amiibo in order to play, and it's... Animal Crossing... as a Mario Party-type game? With only four compatible Animal Crossing amiibo? Huh? I mean at least it's only four more amiibo that I must aim to collect somehow, but still. Hopefully they'll announce some sort of crossover with the Mario-series amiibo or something.
E: Looks like it's 8 amiibo. Poo. RIP my wallet.

Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer - I don't want the game, but I must point out that I was, up until this point, unaware that I existed in the Animal Crossing universe. I was included in E3, suckers!

Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water - Meh. Never played this series, probably never will.

Earthbound Beginnings - I understand where the hype is coming from, but this is another game I will never play. I will continue to support your campaign for Mother 3 regardless.

Chibi-Robo: Zip Lash - The game that will get me to stop collecting amiibo. I'm not spending $60 on a game I don't even want just for the plastic figure. Screeeeeeeeew that.

Xenoblade Chronicles X - I dunno. Honestly I'm feeling really "meh" about this game. But it's also friggin' massive and with my lack of time, I do prefer games that don't consume all of my time these days.

Metroid Prime: Federation Force - Literally the biggest letdown.

Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash - Meh.

Mario & Sonic - Also meh.

Genei Ibun Roku #FE - I saw some Fire Emblem characters with radical redesigns. To be honest, not excited for this at all.

Fire Emblem Fates - I honestly preferred the Fire Emblem If title. Not sure where I stand on this; I don't want to have to buy the game three times just to get the full experience. >.>

I mean I know that Sticker Star totally sucked and that Dream Team was a mess overloaded with tutorials so please, please, please let this be a return to form. It's obviously more Mario & Luigi than it is Paper Mario but still

I mean it looks really fun and oh my gosh

Please follow this up with a proper Paper Mario sequel in the future pleeeeeeeeeeeeeease

Skylanders Superchargers - Those Donkey Kong & Bowser amiibo look totally rad and I want them give them to me now

Thanks a Bunch! =D

3DS + Amiibo

Posted by Stark , in Video Games, Collection Jun 10 2015 · 283 views

So Hyrule Warriors has been leaked for 3DS. I am excited; I enjoyed the game enough on the Wii U, but I feel like it's the kind of experience that I'll appreciate more on the 3DS.

My custom Inkling Boy amiibo arrived in the mail today! I like it.
