Smash Files 5 - Villager Profile

Posted by Lucina , in Smash Files, Video Games Jun 16 2013 · 580 views

These character profiles are going to be a little shorter; these are more my brief observations on the characters, rather than all-out essays on each one.

Villager Profile
Posted ImageIf that isn't going to be the ultimate troll face as your face is pummelled into the dirt, I don't know what is.
Species: Human
Series: Animal Crossing
First Appearance: Animal Crossing (GCN, 2001)
Latest Appearance: Animal Crossing: New Leaf (3DS, 2013)

# of Appearances: 5, across 4 systems

1st Party

Favourite Appearance: Animal Crossing: Wild World (DS, 2005)

Known For: Digging up treasure, collecting shells, catching bugs, planting trees, decorating homes, angering Mr. Resetti, naming constellations, making idle chitchat, becoming mayor

Excitement Factor: 9/10. The Villager isn't exactly the first character I would have chosen, nor would I have even put him into Smash Bros. - however, after watching the trailer and witnessing some of his attacks in action, I am very excited to give him a go.

Next up:I will either discuss the stages I'm hoping to battle on again, or you'll get a profile of everybody's favourite grumpy Mario villain.

Smash Files 4 - Character Costumes

Posted by Lucina , in Smash Files, Video Games Jun 16 2013 · 559 views

Turning this series of Super Smash Bros. 4 related entries into a bona fide series, expect this to be as regularly updated as I can possibly be with perhaps the busiest summer of my life coming right up. This series will detail my response to news that we receive with regards to the game, and profiles of the characters announced (expect the first character profile soon), but also mostly my thoughts on the series in general so far and what I believe should be added or changed in this entry.

This entry is with regards to the characters of the game – or, more specifically, the alternate decorations for them. Since the first game in the series, you have been able to change the colour of your character. You can have Mario dressed up like Wario, or you can have Samus in the colour schemes of a variety of her different suits. In Brawl, some of these alternate colour schemes included the dark versions of a character, such as Link and Pit (or, in the case of Metaknight, darker). While this feature is very cool, and allows for several players to use the same character with minimal drawbacks and confusion, it is beginning to dry up.

We are in the year 2013 now. We are coming up on the fourth entry in this series. At this stage, anything that can be changed while still holding onto the core experience that the series provides must be changed in order to keep the series fresh and relevant. These alternate colour schemes are included in this.

Removing them is not ideal – and would be a step backwards. But I just feel unsatisfied with where they are right now. In fact, I wasn’t even fully satisfied back when Brawl was first released, and as stupid as I am today, I was far worse five years ago (I hope). What these alternate selections need is a revamping. The developers need to move forward, and give us more advanced options for each character.

Take Mario, for instance. Back in Melee, there was a character called “Dr. Mario”. A carbon copy of Mario with minor differences in attack powers, and an electrical theme over the fire theme prevalent with regular Mario, Dr. Mario wasn’t exactly worth being a character in his own right. I loved using him (he remains my favourite character in the game today), but that just doesn’t change the fact that there is a far more elegant solution available – make Dr. Mario an alternate colour scheme. Why must we accept having only different colours of Mario’s overall, hat, and shirt? While some of these are cool to use and are extremely useful for Machinima (Fire Mario, Wario Mario), others are not quite so cool (Inverted Mario, Blue Hat Mario). Do these other ones need to be removed? Not necessarily. But why not give us some more original costumes for the character? Dr. Mario, Hammer Mario, and Cloud Mario are all variations of Mario that add some extra stuff to the character that we don’t see right now, and could make for even more unique battles.

With Link, the Zora armour could retain its unique look alongside its typical colour. With Donkey Kong, we could get a Cranky Kong inspired costume. With Samus, her power suit variants could hold onto any armour add-ons they might include. Fox and Falco could both have variant suits from their different games, as not all of those suits match each other perfectly. Kirby could have some of the accessories from the forms in his series.

Admittedly, this would not work with some characters – Jigglypuff and Pikachu, for instance, don’t have much to work with, and Olimar hasn’t ever been seen outside of his space suit to base a costume off of. However, I believe that it would be beneficial overall, and I certainly don’t see any reason why the developers can’t implement it in this next instalment.

That’s it for this time; next up is a character profile of one of our confirmed new fighters.

Smash Files 3 - Super Smash Bros. 4: Most Wanted Part 3

Posted by Lucina , in Video Games, Smash Files Jun 15 2013 · 473 views

Top 10 Most Wanted 1st Party
  • Paper Mario (Paper Mario series)
  • Mike Jones (StarTropics series)
  • Isaac (Golden Sun series)
  • Dimentio (Paper Mario series)
  • Midna (Legend of Zelda series)
  • Vaati (Legend of Zelda series)
  • Chrom (Fire Emblem Series)
  • Eggplant Wizard (Kid Icarus series)
  • Magolor (Kirby series)
  • Shulk (Xenoblade Chronicles)
I do not care that Paper Mario is just another form of Mario - think about it for a moment, and you'll realize that Paper Mario can't possibly be a clone of Mario (aside from, you know, being a paperized version of Mario). Midna would work very well too, if she was riding wolf Link, and although I've never played the series he originates from, Mike Jones seems to be retro enough and obscure enough to add into Smash Bros. and give a new spotlight to.

I have created a monstrosity that is about 4million bytes big. Just a little Nintendo Power cover I made as part of the stuff for my father this coming Sunday.

Smash Files 1 - Super Smash Bros. 4: Most Wanted Part 1

Posted by Lucina , in Smash Files, Video Games Jun 12 2013 · 792 views

Now that we've been given a glimpse of the first seeral characters for Super Smash Bros. 4, I figured I'd do up some lists of the characters I want. 10 to return, 10 from Nintendo to join in, and 10 from 3rd parties to join in. We'll start with the veterans.

Admittedly, Toon Link is an extremely long shot, since he's in the Spirit Tracks stage on 3DS, but hey, I can dream, and I've been disappointed before (Dr. Mario, come back!!)

Top 10 Most Wanted to Return

  • Solid Snake (Metal Gear series)

Batman Update

Posted by Lucina , in Video Games Jun 04 2013 · 112 views

After some deliberation, and after looking at the comments, I decided to pick up Arkham Asylum, so that I can play it through and be 100% guaranteed to not be comparing it to Arkham City the entire way through. I'll play Asylum and enjoy it, and when I'm done (or when City is on sale again, whichever comes first), I'll move on to the next game. :)

Batman

Posted by Lucina , in Video Games Jun 04 2013 · 111 views

Both Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City are 75% off on Steam right now. I've only had a little bit of experience with Arkham City; that's the extent of my playing either game so far. I am going to buy one, and I only have enough in Steam to buy one - so I'm looking for recommendations. Arkham Asylum is a couple dollars cheaper (leaving the possibility open that another game comes out on a deal that I can pick up) and it's the first one - otherwise, I don't see any reasons to buy one over the other.

So, I'm asking you folk.

Back in Form (L4D2, TF2, Minecraft)

Posted by Lucina , in Life, Video Games May 01 2013 · 64 views

Yes... as of today, I am back. B-)

And that means, of course, that I am now once more up for Left 4 Dead 2, Team Fortress 2, and Minecraft (BZPC AT LAST!!). Those of you who I have played/tried to play L4D2 with, I'm hoping to get a session going this Friday.

Regarding PYRO

Posted by Lucina , in Video Games Apr 11 2013 · 206 views

So, I think most of us here are familiar with Pyro - y'know, that lovable muffled chum from Team Fortress 2 that sets everything ablaze (except every single magical wooden structure within the game).

Last year, on December 31st 2011 (which for our purposes, was so late that we'll consider it January 1st 2012) I started Mafia III: The Cult. I replaced the typical "mafia" group with a "cult" group. However, this also led to my changing up several other typical roles.

The Detective became a saviour for those the Cult kidnapped; the Doctor could save them before they were kidnapped, and could not be converted, and I even changed the official title to "Medic"(a term that has for the most part remained); and then of course the Cult turned people into new Cultists, increasing their size instead of killing off the other side.

However, I also made one other change: in Mafia there is a role known as the "Arsonist". This player is sort of like a serial killer, in that once every two rounds they kill someone, except that it is fire related, and of course they are only allied to themselves. Sometimes, there is a particular role that protects only from the Arsonist.

I changed the Arsonist to the "Pyro" - a role that was still allied only to itself. However, the Medic could not protect people from the Pyro (in a second installment, I created the "Engineer" role, which could protect from the Pyro). The Pyro would select two targets each night they were active, select a weapon to use on each one (either a flamethrower or an axe, like in TF2), and then the player to die was selected via a dice roll.

Fast forward to today, where my latest game, Bionicle Mafia III: By the Numbers - With a Vengeance has just ended. The Pyro has remained as a role within almost every single Mafia game, sometimes in a more traditional "pick one player, they die" role, and sometimes closer to its original incarnation. In this most recent game, the Medic could save Pyro targets, and the target to die was chosen by an online version of rock-paper-scissors; similar, but a little different. The next game appears to have the Pyro playing some sort of major role - he even shows up in the title! I don't know how Zakaro will use the role, but I think it's kinda cool that a role I actually invented has lasted so long.

So, here's to the Pyro remaining a role in many Mafia games to come.

just for fun
