Looking Back 01: Changing Your Name
3 (almost 4) years ago I posted some sort of rant about changing your display name on BZPower while browsing through the old times of my blog (and maybe we can discuss my urges to delete all of 2011/2012 later).
Figured I'd do a little write up on the topic again, since my opinion has clearly changed, and did so quite awhile ago.
Back then I used to hate it when people called me anything other than ibrow (which is, somewhat ironically, something I actively dislike being called these days), even if my display name was different. The rant in that old entry wasn't huge, but it is kinda silly.
I suppose back then I found it difficult to adjust to having a new display name, but that's certainly not the case anymore. If I had to pinpoint when that changed, it was probably later on in 2013, when I finally dropped "ibrow" completely and became "Voltex" instead. A change in identity, as it were, would have made it an easier adjustment, though until very late in 2014, most of my names were still modifications of the same name (though it was "Voltex" now, rather than "ibrow").
I mentioned being bothered by people referring to me by the new display name, which is quite silly in retrospect. Not that it's a huge issue nowadays; I've been around long enough and active in enough places (plus, y'know, the shrinking memberbase) that most members I interact with refer to me as Voltex or Tex out of habit - though my aggressive responses towards being called "ibrow" in the past as I tried to remove myself from the name may have helped as well.
Of course, I spent about a year and a half with the display name "Lucina", directly going against both of these. When I was referred to as Lucina by other members it never bothered me, though it was a somewhat rare occurrence, and of course, adjusting to a different name is a non-issue. After a brief stint as "Tex" for familiarity's sake, I am now "Stark", though how long I'll remain so is anyone's guess.
I guess, like most things on BZP and elsewhere these days, my general attitude towards name changes is almost a resounding "meh". I'm not going to be particularly excited with it, though I do make an effort to stick to names that won't embarrass me when I look back at them (I think the name changes I've had in the past that I actively dislike should be quite obvious).
I am operating under a new challenge for any future name changes right now: keep it to one word.
(It's not very exciting).
So that's that, I suppose. Yet another rambling entry on the topic of name changes, which are a frequent enough subject on this blog that I could probably give them their own category (but I won't). In a way, this entry is a comparison of myself now and then, but examining how people work (and how I work/have worked) has always been fascinating to me, so in that sense, rambling on about it isn't very surprising at all.
But in the end, I do have better and more important things to do with my time, so that's all for now.
