Name change, coming back to my default after something like a year. Now with brand new Armored Rider Baron duds, because he is My Favorite. I'll probably change up my avatars more often now...probably sticking with a Kamen Rider theme though.

Online Coursing (& Other School Thoughts)

Posted by dotcom , Sep 24 2015 · 188 views

I'm taking my first fully online course this semester. I'm taking two. I took a hybrid part-online-part-live course last semester and that didn't...go so hot. But so far these haven't been too bad. I'm only going to university 3 days of the week, so I generally have time to work on the online stuff, but man, work piles up fast. This stuff is neverending. My first year in university I had a pretty...let's call it "lax" approach to my classes. Pretty much never did any of the assigned readings, did half-hearted or rushed or last-minute work on most everything and just was pretty lazy in my attitude towards university. And I...well, I did still end up with mostly A's and high B's and stuff, so I guess that worked out fine for me while it lasted, but this semester where two of the classes rely entirely on me actually having some motivation to do stuff and keeping up with work, well...after the first week back I realized this wasn't working out at all.

So now I'm really trying to change my approach. Usually the idea of studying or doing homework was always such a drag because I had all this other fun stuff to do, so I guess I've finally come to realize I don't necessarily need to do only one or the other (so I'm taking breaks in between work and stuff, keeping motivation up). And it's been going well, actually. I've been doing all the work I have to, turning in or finishing things usually ahead of time. Trying to keep up. I will say, having taken the same haphazard approach to schooling all throughout k-12 that I did in my first semester in university, this whole "paying attention and doing my work" thing feels pretty weird, but it's cool. Every year I'm like "this time i'll get down to business and become a good student." Only took me 19 years to finally do it. Better late than never, I suppose.

I think I've been having less stress as a result of all this, anyway. Can't complain (too much).

Anyway, the online courses sure are new to me. Odd thing, working at my pace. Having the lectures available to watch whenever it's convenient during the week instead of at a set time is definitely, well, convenient, though. As is the fact that often I can play the lecture video at faster speeds. Such a time saver. Real life is missing out.

I also like the fact that if I get kinda bored during an online lecture I can just start playing with my toys to avoid falling asleep. Real life really is missing out.

Bad @ Exams

Posted by dotcom , Sep 18 2015 · 237 views

Today was my first exam of the semester, it was for my intro to cultural anthropology class. The class, readings, and exam are pretty involved, so I kinda spent the previous week doing some serious studying and reading (and stressing) a lot. But since there was so much to cover I still spent yesterday and most of last night busy preparing but even then I didn't even really feel ready. I got less than three hours of sleep.

But. So, you know how sometimes teachers will give students sample tests or past tests to prepare for, well, tests. You know how they're usually just that, samples of what you can expect, and pretty good study tools, but not the actual tests you will be taking. How the questions aren't literally the same questions you will see in the actual thing. You know?

Because, I guess, my professor didn't get that memo. I get the test and something like 80% of the exam is lifted from the sample exam we got. Same exact questions, wording. The same.

I mean, it was sort of a relief, but mostly it was kind of irritating. I wasted a lot of good time and effort stressing over this thing, and in the end it didn't really matter (i mean, i don't regret all the reading and studying i did, because i love the subject and all, but i could have done without the stress at least). I'm pretty sure I only got like one and a half questions wrong at most. Hard to say I'm particularly happy about it since the entire thing was more or less given away, but whatever.

Anyway I got home and instead of doing any of my pending schoolwork (that, you know, I mostly put on hold to focus on the exam) I just sort of "whatever'd" it and decided to watch the last six or eight episodes of AoS season 2 since I noticed it got on Netflix. That ending sure was a thing they did. Productive day, all in all.

In other news, it's been fantastic seeing Colbert back on television over the past couple of weeks. First episode or two were a bit rocky but it didn't take long at all for them to really get their footing. The Late Show has been great so far.

my a ghosts eye
Posted Image

My eye came in the mail today. It's a pretty decent eye. It even has my face, look.

Well it's more like Newton's face. But that's whose ghost I am. So.

My first foray into the rabbit hole that is Kamen Rider roleplay toys. I like the eyes, so I'm buying some eyes. They don't really do much though. Too bad the lame spooky ghost belt doesn't come out until next month. Still, it's a cool eye.
