Question for 3DS-owning persons

Posted by dotcom , Jun 09 2013 · 373 views

So it's my birthday today, and Best Buy has 3DS's on sale for that father day thing that is also happening this week. I want to get one in preparation for Pokemon Y, but just owning one without any games for four months would be incredibly lame.

So basically, are there any games you guys would recommend? Preferably good ones. Maybe even DS ones, I don't know. (The 3DS can do that right? It can run DS titles. I don't mind. I haven't bought a handheld in nine years, so it's all new to me......)

Well, it appears you like Pokemon so I recommend Black II or White II. Other than that, maybe Mario Kart 7.

Mario Kart 7, Luigi's Mansion 2, Mario Land 3D and OoT 3D are all top notch. Also, Professor Layton Miracle Mask.

Now, opening that up to DS games adds a gajillion more games, since the DS has an amazing library and the 3DS can play them. So you won't be short on games.

Gotta toss in the obligatory plug for Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate: It has a bit of a learning curve, but that game eats your time once you get into it.

Also, Star Fox 64 and Kid Icarus are both pretty decent.

Regarding Monster Hunter, look up ProJared and his videos. He's a professional game reviewer (to a point). He released some great videos regarding how to play MH.

Also, Ocarina of Time 3D.

Seconding pretty much all of these recommendations, and like Booker said, if you include the DS there's an absolutely titanic library of games to choose from.  All depends on what kind of games you're into.

Oh, and if you're into strategy RPGs at all, Fire Emblem: Awakening is a must.

Kid Icarus Uprising all the way!

As 3DS games go, you can never go wrong with Mario (New Super Mario Bros. 2) or his cowardly brother Luigi (Luigi's Mansion 2).

Monster Hunter 3 is also pretty legit, but you'll want the Circle Pad Pro to go with it.

Aside from obligatory Pokemon mentions, there's also the Virtual Console, which has a fair amount of cool games (I've always been partial to the Mario/Wario Land series, myself) which are slightly shorter, but infinitely cheaper.

I got the 3DS before having a DS, so I was able to get in on all the cheaper games that are still great. Zelda, Professor Layton, Metroid, Mega Man Zero Collection was nice... you can also get older Pokemon games and Mario games there are plenty. As for 3DS games, Monster Hunter Tri, Fire Emblem: Awakening (a MUST), Ocarina of Time, Super Mario 3D Land, newest Harvest Moon got great reviews... Also Animal Crossing is out, plus Pokemon... it can only get better. Finally there's a ton of stuff on the virtual console for any older (and newer) games you want... Really been digging into that. Glad I got it. In fire red. ;D

Well, I think I'm interested in Ocarina of Time 3D and Professor Layton MM. However, I don't really know if playing those games standalone would work....Would I need to play the other games in the series to enjoy/begin to understand them?

Fire Emblem Awakening is good for strategy gaming. Kid Icarus: Uprising is a good action game. Mario Kart, New Super Mario Bros., and Ocarina of Time are as good as ever. Luigi's Mansion is also really good. Plus, there are all sorts of smaller downloadable titles like Denpa Men that are still high-quality and buckets of fun.
