Medieval stuff

What is it with medieval stuff and its strangely large influence on fiction?

Living in a place that went through that period as part of its history, it's kind of disappointing how many fictional works seem to make themselves way more boring by allowing themselves to be influenced too much by it. Asides from the fictional works produced during the medieval period, that has an excuse.

The medieval time period, though in reality not one to be envious of living in, gets really romanticized with knights and castles and the like.

IMO the Victorian Age is where it's at. B-)

I know, that's the annoying part of it, the implied romanticizations. Apparently being peasants and serfs to the gentry and nobility is something to be envious of, along with the poor health stuff.

I think I'd like to see more of the neolithic age in fiction, to be honest.
