If you suspect your HDD is dying, REMOVE IT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AND MAKE SURE YOUR COMPUTER DOES NOT ATTEMPT TO BOOT FROM IT

A bunch of problems I have been having all stemmed from THAT ONE BLASTED HDD. Booting improperly? HDD's fault. Slow? HDD's fault.

Once we had removed the HDD EVERYTHING WAS FINE.

Other than losing the drive that had a bunch of stuff on it, but hey, HDDs go for relatively cheap in terms of computer part prices these days anyway.

ALSO JOIN FIVE FACTION FACE OFF

I feel really, really dumb right now and could have avoided a ton of frustration had I done something sooner.

Once you switch to SSD for the OS and programs, you never want to go back. I can recommend it to everyone. Really, it's the best you can do to get a fast computer.

Apart from that, regular backups are a must. No excuses.

My laptop's been dying a slow painful death for the last several years, with so many varied errors I didn't even try fixing most of them because I knew they were beyond my skill level. Your post makes me think there might still be hope.
