Electronic Music

If you hear electronic music on the radio, chances are it's dance-pop. I don't mean to imply dance-pop is intrinsically bad; it just has no place in my musical tastes, partially because a lot of it sounds musically similar to my ear, partially because of its rampant overuse of Auto-Tune, partially because I tire of lyrics about clubs and flirting, and partially because I don't like dancing. It's a shame that those sorts of songs are chosen to represent electronic music on the radio, because there seem to be many electronic artists who make non-dance-pop music but aren't as popular.

The Postal Service is one such artist; their album Give Up is thoughtful and somber in a fashion a lot of popular technopop can't replicate. Port Blue, a second solo project by Adam Young of Owl City, makes thoughtful, ambient new age / post-rock. Linkin Park's albums A Thousand Suns and Living Things have placed the band firmly in electronic rock territory.

I'm looking for more bands and artists similar to those aforementioned. If you have any suggestions, preferably non-explicit and non-offending, do comment.

:kaukau: The radio can be good, if you have a digital radio that can take you to certain stations. The everyday stations with the current hip music, however, doesn't really appeal to people such as Legolover and I who want music that can mean a little more to us, whether it be emotionally or artistically.

I agree that a lot of electronic music these days is beginning to sound very familiar, to the point where from song to song there's not much of a difference in identity and it all becomes background noise. And yeah, I'm really surprised at how many songs are about partying and flirting these days, which seem to be subjects that don't really go anywhere, and when going to an actual party the music basically has no theme.

To point out the obvious, there's Daft Punk. Their music isn't necessarily somber, but they sure to know how to create a good, original techno tune. Then there's Cascada ("Every Time We Touch"), Basshunter ("Dota", "All I Ever Wanted", and "Now You're Gone"), Eiffel 65 (the ever-so-fun "I'm Blue"), ATC (I just like their music in general), and I'm just a fan of a lot of 90's electronic music in general. Again, not somber and especially meaningful, but they have a few good songs with catchy and memorable tunes. I guess I'm falling for stereotypes here, but while writing this post I decided to listen to electronic music on Pandora, and I'll come back it anything stands out that fits your descriptions.

EDIT: I thought of STYX and the song "Mr. Roboto". That's a meaningful song.

The musical piece called "Heavy Light", the last in Animusic 2, is clearly a great composition executed through the electronic medium, and is certainly enhanced by the animation it was composed for.

I believe everyone knows at this point that radio is terrible.

Wait wait wait! What about classic rock stations? At least they largely play music which was good enough to remember fondly this many years later.

Of course, I may be biased seeing as my family owns a total of three radio stations...

I was making a exaggeration for the sake of humor. :P Classic rock station and classical music stations are probably the biggest exception to radio's general terribleness.
