Quick Thoughts on Movies I've seen this summer

Posted by Toa Smoke Monster , Jul 20 2017 · 49 views
Movies, Wonder Woman and 3 more...
Some of you may have noticed that I haven't been posting my thoughts on movies that have been coming out this summer. (Or you have not noticed. I don't know. :P) This is because it's been a really rough summer for me at my job. Summers have always been rough at my job, but this year has been extremely tough, especially this month.

But I still wanted to at least mention some of the movies I've seen this past summer. So I'm going to just mention which movies I've seen and give some quick thoughts on them. They are as follows:

1. Wonder Woman: Finally DC gets a great movie for the DCEU under its belt. I really enjoyed it, despite the fact I had to see it in 3D because the 2D showing I wanted to see was sold out. I definitely recommend this movie.

2. Transformers: The Last Knight: Anthony Hopkins being in this movie is the best thing about it. Otherwise, though, it's your typical Transformers movie from Michael Bay. It's the only movie I've seen this summer that I was though was 'meh.' I say wait for the film to be discounted in a sale to get it if you really want to see it.

3. Spider-Man: Homecoming: This is probably my favorite movie I've seen this summer so far. Tom Holland proves that he can hold a movie on his own as Peter Parker/Spider-Man. I really liked the many callbacks to the previous Marvel films too. Plus, The Vulture was an interesting villain, and was different from other villains we've seen in the MCU. I highly recommend this movie to those interested.

4. War for the Planet of the Apes: Another great movie IMO. It doesn't have as many action scenes in it as the name of the movie might suggest, but that didn't bother me because the story kept me invested in the film. Though the action scenes it did have were really good. I will admit that I think that Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, the movie that came out before this one, had a slightly stronger story. But this film is still great and I recommend it to all those interested.

And there are my summed up thoughts on these movies. Maybe sometime in the future I'll talk about some of these in more detail. But right now I'm looking forward to the future, and really hoping an Avengers: Infinity War trailer gets released this weekend at Comic-Con. :)

Have any of you seen these movies? And if so, what did you think of them?

A Long Week is Over

Finally, Thank Goodness
It has been a LONG week for me these past seven days. At my job, the week of Fourth of July is the busiest in the summer. And since I work PM and overnight shifts, that resulted with me working a lot. I actually saw the sunrise three mornings in a row after working repeated overnight shifts. It was exhausting.

But it's over now, so the rest of the summer shouldn't be as bad. I hope. :P

Thoughts on SNES Classic

Posted by Toa Smoke Monster , Jun 27 2017 · 20 views
Nintendo, SNES, Classic
With the NES Classic being so popular last year, it's not surprising to see Nintendo make a SNES Classic to follow it up. Here is a list of games for it, courtesy of IGN:
  • Contra III: The Alien Wars
  • Donkey Kong Country
  • EarthBound
  • Final Fantasy III
  • F-ZERO
  • Kirby Super Star
  • Kirby’s Dream Course
  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
  • Mega Man X
  • Secret of Mana
  • Star Fox
  • Star Fox 2
  • Street Fighter® II Turbo: Hyper Fighting
  • Super Castlevania IV
  • Super Ghouls ’n Ghosts
  • Super Mario Kart
  • Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
  • Super Mario World
  • Super Metroid
  • Super Punch-Out!!
  • Yoshi’s Island

Star Fox fans should take special notice of this, as this includes star Fox 2, a never before released sequel to the first Star Fox game. That alone could help the SNES Classic be even more popular than the NES one, as this has a new game on it.

As for the other games, I think it has a good selection of them. Out of all of these, I've only played Super Metroid, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, and Mario Kart. I've kind of been interested in playing Earthbound and F-Zero, just to see what they are like. I've also watched Let's Plays of Yoshi's Island and Donkey Kong Country, so I wouldn't mind trying those games too.

Overall, I think this will be even more popular than the NES Classic, especially since it has a new game on it. I just hope that Nintendo makes enough for everyone to get a chance to get one.

What are your thoughts on the SNES Classic? Do you plan to get one?

Tropical Storm Cindy

Tropical Storms, Cindy
Tropical Storm Cindy is predicted to be hitting my local area as of this entry later tonight. Or as least, we'll be getting hit by its dry side. (The west side of it) Regardless, it's been awhile since anything tropical has affected where I live. I don't know how bad the storms will be, but I do expect a lot of rain, lightning, and strong winds. Thankfully, I'm off from work today and tomorrow, so I'll be home when it hits and don't have to worry about work until Friday.

As with any storm, there is a chance that it could knock out our WiFi and/or power. So if you don't see me on here later tonight or tomorrow, that's probably why. Hopefully it won't come to that though.

Guess that's all I got to say on this. See you all on the flip side. B-)

Quick Thoughts on Black Panther Teaser Trailer 1

Posted by Toa Smoke Monster , Jun 10 2017 · 12 views
Black Panther, Marvel and 2 more...

When I learned that this trailer was being revealed last night, I was a little surprised. I thought that we wouldn't see anything on Black Panther until at least after Spider-Man: Homecoming was out in theaters. But I'm not complaining, because this trailer is great.

I like how it continues to trend in recent Marvel movies of showing just enough to get you interested in the movie but not give the majority of the plot away. (Though Spider-Man is an exception to that. :P) It's a trend that I hope Marvel continues to use.

Overall, this looks really good. I'm interested in seeing it when it comes out in February. B-)

What do you all think of the teaser trailer?

The following video is about a year old, but I only found it on Facebook the other day. Regardless, it's really cool. It shows scientists founding sharks living in an active volcano.

It's a great find IMO. B-)

Quick Thoughts on PotC: Dead Men Tell No Tales

Posted by Toa Smoke Monster , Jun 01 2017 · 9 views
Pirates, 5th Movie, PotC and 1 more...
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales came out last weekend, and that is when I saw the movie. It's definitely better than the fourth movie, On Stranger Tides. But it still falls short compared to the first three IMO.

They are some good things in it though. One of the opening sequences involving Jack and Co. stealing a bank vault is really cool. It definitely something not seen in a Pirates movie before, and it's one of my favorite action scenes in the movie.

The relationship between Henry and Carina, the two love interests, doesn't feel near as forced here as the one between the guy and the mermaid in the the fourth one. There're no Will and Elisabeth, but I did care for them a little bit by the end of the movie.

And the visuals in this film are stunning. This movie really looks great most of the time.

But this does have some issues. One of them is Jack Sparrow. He's a little too goofy here than he has been in the other movies. Yeah, that's part of his character. But in the other films it felt like he always had a plan underneath the silliness. Here, his character just feels off, like he's trying too hard to get a laugh from the audience. For most of DMTNT, I felt like Jack was just winging it, which isn't like him.

Another issue is the villains. Captain Salazar was cool, and his backstory gave him a good reason for wanting Jack dead. But I don't think he was as interesting of a supernatural villain as Barbossa in Pirates 1 or Davy Jones in the second and third movies. Plus, the designs of some of his crew just looked odd. One guy was missing the upper half of his head, and another was just a floating pair of hands. A FLOATING PAIR OF HANDS! Yes, they were ghosts, and the way they were cursed sort of explains why they look as they do. But they still looked weird.

There is also a wedding scene that just didn't need to be in this film. It tries to be funny, but is painful to watch.

My biggest issue with the film, however, kind of goes into spoiler territory. It involves the end of the film. So I will put it in spoiler tags.

I know I've ranted on this film a bit, and I don't mean to sound like I hated it. Because I didn't hate all of it. I was just mostly disappointed by it. I really liked the first three Pirate films, especially At World's End. I was hoping after the disaster that was On Stranger Tides, DMTNT would help put the series back on track and be as good as those movies. Though it does take steps in that direction, it also hammers home that maybe its time for the franchise to finally be put to rest. And if the Pirates of the Caribbean movies are going to keep being like this, then maybe it is time for it to end.

Have you seen Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales? If so, what did you think of it? And what is your overall favorite Pirates movie?

40 Years of Star Wars

Star Wars, 40th, Anniversary
So today is the 40th anniversary of Star Wars. It was on this day, back in 1977, that the first Star Wars film came out, giving the world one of the best sci-fi movies ever made.

And since then, we've gotten seven more Star Wars film with more on the way, comics, books, video games, multiple TV shows, and tons of merchandise. (Many of it being Lego sets. :) ) While the quality of these things depends on the person, there's no argument that Star Wars holds a special place in many people's hearts. And with the franchise moving forward, it will no doubt do the same for generations to come.

Here's to another 40 years of Star Wars! B-)

What are some of your favorite Star Wars films, books, TV shows, comics, video games, and/or merchandise?

Hand Spinners

Hand Spinners, Question and 2 more...
For those who don't know what a hand spinner is, it looks something like this.

Anyways, I learned yesterday that these objects called 'hand spinners' are the newest craze going on right now. I actually didn't even know that they existed until yesterday. All I've seen them do is spin for a long time while someone is holding it. That's it. I guess they could spin on their own while their laying on a table or something similar, but when I saw people try to do that, the spinner became mobile and crashed into stuff.

I've also seen them being sold for all kinds of different prices. Online, I've seen them being sold for a couple dollars. But at my local Kroger they were being sold at eight dollars for one spinner. That's not to mention that my one of my coworkers said he bought one for twenty dollars and sold it to someone else for forty dollars. (Yes, FORTY DOLLARS!)

I guess I just don't see the appeal of them. I mean, they look cool, and it's neat that they can spin for as long as they do. But I just don't see why people would spend so much money on them. I personally wouldn't spend more than five dollars on a spinner, if I were to get one.

Am I just missing something here? I admit that I don't always keep up with what's popular these days, so I very well could be. If I am, can anyone explain to me why these spinners has become so popular? I'd really be interested to know. Especially since people are apparently willing to buy them for twenty to forty dollars.

And what do you think of the spinners? Do you like them, or not?

Quick Thoughts on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Posted by Toa Smoke Monster , May 09 2017 · 92 views
GotG, Thoughts, Marvel, Sequels and 1 more...
It's been awhile since I've done one of these. :P

Anyways, I enjoyed Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. A lot of the jokes were really funny, the action scenes were great, and the movie itself just looked beautiful. It also had a really good soundtrack. It's not as memorable as the first movie's, but it's still good.

Everyone in the movie gets a moment to shine, from Peter to Rocket to Baby Groot. Yondu is probably the one who gets the most character development, though everyone from the first movie who is in this one gets more development. Even the villain is developed well. At least better than some villains from previous Marvel movies.

But even though I did liked this movie, I still prefer the first one a little bit more. I felt like this movie was a little too silly at times. Don't get me wrong, it does have some serious scenes, and they are really good. But I do think that they did go a little overboard with the jokes.

Also, the villain does one thing that I thought was kind of baffling. I'm putting it in spoiler tags, so if you haven't seen the movie and don't want to be spoiled, don't open it:

Overall, this is definitely another hit for Marvel. Anyone who enjoyed the first Guardians will probably really like this one too. It has it's flaws, but it's still a good film to kick off the summer season of movies. So if you haven't already, go check it out. You will be entertained.

Have you seen GotG Vol. 2? And if so, what did you think of it?

It's May the Fourth, so I thought I'd post something Star Wars related here to celebrate the occasion. And what better way to mark the day than to show one of the first YouTube videos I ever watched ten years ago, which just happened to be a Lego Star Wars homemade video.

Thoughts on Star Wars: The Last Jedi Teaser

Posted by Toa Smoke Monster , Apr 16 2017 · 117 views
Star Wars, The Last Jedi, Luke and 2 more...

Unless you've been living under a rock, you've probably known that this trailer came out the other day. Star Wars fans have been waiting to see what Luke Skywalker return to the franchise. He made a cameo in Force Awakens, which was cool. But it's great that he will have a bigger role to play in this movie. :)

One thing I really liked about this teaser is that it didn't give that much away about it's story, similar to how the first Force Awakens teaser did back in 2014. I know that's a given, since this is a teaser, but I hope that it's something that the next trailer or two will do as well. Say what you want about Episode 7, but at least it's trailers did a great job of getting people excited for the movie without revealing a lot of its story. I really hope the next trailer for The Last Jedi can do the same.

The other thing that I thought was interesting about the movie is Luke quote stating 'The Jedi must end.' I've read some theories on what he really means by this statement. I seen some say that he might've turned to the Dark Side, which I highly doubt would've happened. Another theory I've seen is that he believes that balance can be restored if the Jedi stop existing. I guess that kind of makes scene, but if that is the case, then we know that Rey will probably convince him otherwise.

But I've also seen some theorize that Luke has become a 'Grey Jedi,' someone who uses both Light and Dark sides of the Force. They think that Luke's quote about the Jedi ending is him stating that the idea of what a Jedi is thought to be up to that point in time needs to stop, so that a new kind of Jedi can come to be. I actually really like this theory, and it's one that I kind of hope is true. But we'll all find out when the film comes out in December. B-)

What do you all think of this teaser? And what you all think Luke means when he says 'The Jedi must end?'
