Calling anyone who's ever upgraded their memory
I'm having an issue with my computer that I need to solve fairly quickly.
I was looking into upgrading my RAM, so I opened up my computer and pulled one of the, uh, RAM pieces out. I took a picture of the unit specs and put it back in. It wasn't clicking into place like it was supposed to, so I fiddled with the latches a bit. That didn't help, so I pulled the other one out and had the same issue.
Eventually I sorta pushed them into place so that they seemed like they clicked. I put everything back into place, plugged the computer in, and turned it on. It ran for a second then died. It kept trying to activate but couldn't.
Assuming I just hadn't secured them correctly, I opened it up again, and re-connected them both. I realized I hadn't secured them all the way, so I assumed that was it. I turned the computer on, and same problem. The light turns on for a second, then turns yellow and dies. The fans begin to run but die as well. (I cleaned some dust off of them with tissues, but I doubt that'd affect anything).
So now I'm trying not to panic. Does anybody have experience with this sort of thing? I did touch the bottom of the RAM pieces before I was aware I shouldn't do that, but I think it was only one of the two. I definitely didn't release any static, I was very careful to remain grounded.
I have an HP Pavilion p7-1070t. HP's support website specifically gives instructions for fixing this specific problem, but most of their instructions apply to installing NEW RAM, not poking around to get an idea of how an upgrade would go in. The one thing they suggested that I haven't tried is to blow compressed air into the socket, but I don't have access to that and I'm trying to keep my parents from knowing about this as long as possible. They wouldn't know how to fix it and they'd just panic because they have no idea how computers operate.
So anyway, HALPZ. D:
