"The immediate consequence of the failure of diplomacy was the outbreak of war." - My history textbook.

 

I do believe my thesis statement for my history essay should be "HISTORY: THAT ESCALATED QUICKLY".

No no no, this the IB program.  You must ask, "To what extent was the historical progress of diplomacy in this comparable instance rapidly escalated into eminent outbreak of war?"

That's not a thesis statement. A thesis statement in this context is a statement of firm and absolute historical fact that you then prove using evidence. 

 

(In literature class, it gets fuzzier, but best to have a statement of fact, or at least a very good theory, otherwise you're sunk.)
