I'm not entirely sold, but its the best theory we have, now that the 'Rose is/was Pink Diamond' theory's been scuttled. =P

Alternately, I've seen the theory that Lion is Pink Pearl. Consider that like our favorite Pearl, Lion seems to have a pocket dimension inside him.

...Actually, come to think of it, that similarity (even if coincidental) might add another layer to Pearl's outburst in "Rose's Scabbard". Pearl might not have just been upset that Rose had kept secrets from her—there could also be the implication that she'd been replaced.

Personally, considering Lion's lack of an obvious gem, I don't know if I believe either theory. If anything, I think Rose Quartz may have killed Pink Diamond. It'd explain Pink Diamond's erasure from modern Gem structures, and could be one of the reasons Rose wasn't keen on going into detail about her past (even with Greg).

Well, we've seen other corrupt gems and they don't always have their gems showing either. 

 

As for Rose possibly having killed Pink Diamond, that has also occurred to me.  The imagery of a broken Pink Diamond symbol at one of the gem structures could very well be hinting at the fact that Pink Diamond was actually broken. 

 

If that were the case, then artificial fusion being used as prototypes for reforming gems could possibly make sense.  Like the Diamonds wanted to find a way to reform Pink Diamond after she was shattered.  It could be possible Pink Diamond was used in the Cluster and that there are hopes she will be in control in the artificial fusion (if that's even possible with that many gem shards).  Although I do have my doubts about that.

 

I wonder if Rose actually knew about the existence of the Cluster or of what Homeworld had planned for Earth.  I'm curious how exactly the resistance won the war.  I mean, they were against at least one diamond (Blue Diamond) and they probably had reinforcements from Homeworld.
