The Lego Movie, and being the biggest nerd there

So I went to see the premiere last night... It was kind of nice having the theater pretty empty, because 1) it's a Thursday and 2) ZOMG BLIZZARD. I had to wear my BZPower shirt just because (photo pending), and with that and my Lego phone case, I felt pretty awesome.

EEEEVERYTHING IS AWESOOOOO-- oh, sorry. I think that's kind of ingrained in my head now.

EVERYTHING IS COOL WHEN YOU'RE PART OF A TEAM

YEAHH

So. What did I think of it? In short, it was absolutely everything I was hoping for and more.

The humor is FANTASTIC. Maybe it was part of the hype I had about the movie, but I was seriously laughing like a crazy person through most of the movie. I like comedic timing and awkward pauses/movements, so this was right up my alley. They did everything so well. It's a movie that you'll enjoy even if you aren't a Lego fan, and it has so many references and nods to every marketing niche Lego has, it's absolutely fantastic. (Note: if you're actually employed by Lego builders *cough cough Swert*, it may feel a bit like you're being attacked near the end. I know with the way some adult hobbyists are, the last area of the movie can be a little uncomfortable. BUT, I think it can be taken with a grain of salt, and overall it doesn't make it any less enjoyable.)

Maybe I was unreasonably excited and had rose-colored glasses on, but honestly I can find so little negative to say about it. Maybe the only thing I can say in this section would be how it began - it was abrupt and unceremonious, and it took me a minute or two to get into. But once I did, I loved the whole ride.

Now to those who have seen it...

When Bionicle flashed on the screen, I screamed. Seriously. Like... "YEEEAH!" and fist pumped. I then realized I was in a room with a bunch of normal people (friends included) and I felt like an absolute weirdo. BUT I don't regret it. Do you guys realize how incredible that is, that they would put in a nod to a dead line, rather than HF or Chima? I think that's one of the most fantastic things about the movie - it wasn't a big plot to sell all their current lines. They had a LOT of old ones.

With all the stand-in voice actors, I was really surprised to hear the ACTUAL voice of C-3P0. Another incredibly awesome thing.

I'll be honest, as far as the real-life parts, Will Ferrell was kind of unfitting. I can't see that curly hair and baby face and think "mean guy". He was okay as the voice of Business, but... oh well. It wasn't so unfitting that it took me out of it. I also kinda disliked the idea that Emmet could actually move in real life. And he can flop around, but not go get the glue cap himself? Eh. Again, nothing bad enough that I can really complain, I just didn't prefer it that way.

As to what was asked somewhere else on BZP, I do think it could have a sequel. That's the beauty of Lego stuff... there's infinitely more possibility. It doesn't have to be Emmet again and it doesn't have to make references to real life again. I think I'd just enjoy anything they make as long as it's got that kind of style and humor.

Seriously guys, go see it. And get anyone you can to go see it with you. I really do think it's a great movie for all types.

The BIONICLE reference is not entirely unusual... after all, there were multiple Fabuland references, and that theme has been dead for over twenty years longer than BIONICLE.

Will Ferrell was a great role for President Business and his live-action inspiration, in my opinion. After all, he's supposed to be something of a sympathetic villain, especially in the third act where the climax is his realization that he doesn't have to be the bad guy.

And a second LEGO movie would be great. I think it would be a bit of a disappointment if it didn't focus on Emmet and some of his Master Builder friends, but you're right, there's no reason it NEEDS to. The possibilities are limitless. The only thing that would make it a major disappointment is if the sequel turns out to be a generic adventure, without the powerful messages and meta-commentary of the original. This was really and truly a movie deeply in touch with the spirit and values of LEGO creative play. A sequel should obviously tell a new story with new messages, but it should still maintain that level of heart and sincerity.

I've already been to see the movie twice in theaters and will be seeing it at least once more on the 22nd as part of my brother's BZPower movie meetup! I am looking forward to the home video release so I can pause and catch more blink-and-you-miss-'em Easter eggs. I KNOW there are some that were difficult to catch in the actual movie, like many of the street signs and billboards. I also hope the home video release will have some quality special features like behind-the-scenes featurettes, creator commentaries, and deleted scenes, like the early BIONICLE movies — not the cruddy special features of more recent LEGO offerings on home video, like repackaged TV specials that weren't important enough to get their own separate home video release.
