Having actually played it, I can finally give my opinion on it.

It.. well... fails.

First off, the controls. The Wii-Mote fails as a game controller; a Gamecube controller is needed to even hope to have fun with this game. Which makes it rather pointless as a Wii-exclusive, as it doesn't even utilize the basic functions of the Wii-mote.

Second, the gameplay. New characters are great and all (and I'm pleased they added some Kirby characters), but in the end, there is no -wow- factor about any of the gaming itself. It's relatively unchanged since Melee, as are the stages. The stages themselves transform or move about, but again, nothing special about it, very standard. Seems like something Melee would have had.

All in all, it's fun, but absolutely no different than Melee, cept for some new characters.

Just saying how it fails competely after all the hard work Sakurai put into this game is rather ignorant. And considering how the formula already worked so well in Melee, why change it? No one, not you or myself should have expected anything drastically different gameplay wise in Brawl.

EDIT: And to say it is abosulutely no different than Melee is ignorant too. The way the physics work in this game are very much altered from Melee. Can you use Falco like you did before? No, because his moveset has slightly changed and his Down-A attack in midair has been dumbed down drastically. This goes for many other veteran characters as well.

.....By the way, care for an online battle? :P

Finally, someone who agrees with me completely on this matter.

Sweet.

Fine, mebbe fail isn't the appropriate word, but it got your attention, dinnit?

And admittedly yes, Melee had a great battle formula, and why change it is a valid question, but in the end, why bother buying Brawl then? Why not just stick with Melee?

I never really cared for Falco. Plus, I don't actually own the game, so I didn't get to try out all of the characters ^^;

Ah, that explains things. You get a deeper impression if you actually have the game, because that way you can compare what changed and what didn't.

As for sticking with Melee, you could very well do that. But I gotta admit, after seven years, the game has run its course. Brawl although similar, is chock full of extra features and other gizmos that would help with the longevity of the game. I guess you could say that it's like an "expansion pack" of some sort.

I suppose I could buy it (or at least rent it) but again, that requires a Wii. I suppose my main gripe is the lack of point to have it on the Wii, as it barely even utilizes the basic functions of Wii-mote, and would serve much better on the Gamecube, or (heaven forbid!) other systems.

Ah, but you forget, one of the biggest wow factors about this game is, in fact, the Wi-fi. Maybe this game isn't for everyone, but all the smash fans( and theres tons of em) that I know, absolutely love the game, and love the wi-fi capabilities. Its kind of the opposite of the Bionicle line, Nintendo's appealing to existing Smash fans, and since there are so many of them, they aren't overly worried about reeling in new people.

Granted, thats just the way I see it.

As for the Wii-mote stuff, using the motion sensing capabilities would have actually gotten in the way of the already smooth gameplay. They deliberately avoided the motion-sensing because many games throw it in, as sort of a gimmick, and it ruins a perfectly good game, because the motion controls just do not fit with the gameplay. And HAL Laboratories wasn't trying to build a game around the Wii controls, if they were, I'm sure it still would've been awesome.
