Taking New Laptop Suggestions

So I still haven't heard back from the repair shop, but my friends and I have all deduced separately that it was likely a motherboard issue that killed my laptop. (They also all admonished me for not going to the free computer help desk in the library that they work at, but having never had need to go there didn't think of it. Stupid, stupid, stupid me... )

So all things considered it'll probably be cheaper just to buy a new one.

My parents seem pretty darn adamant about me getting a Dell since my mom won't stop sending me emails about deals on Dells. Probably because we get a discount on them if ordered through my dad's office/the place I worked at this summer. But I don't know if I even want to go that route.

*sigh*

I don't know what to get. :(

So I guess try to stick to Dell. What to you guys is a good laptop to look into right now?

Depends on how much you're willing to spend and what kind of laptop you're after. As an all-purpose machine, I've generally been partial to HP's; downside is they tend to kick the fan into overdrive for some of the smaller things, but anything you want done, it'll get done. I need a new computer too, and there's an HP I'm eyeing for about 900 or so, which comes with some good perks.

If you want to go more expensive for, say, a gaming laptop, there's other options there. I've heard good things about ASUS.

I don't necessarily want to game, though, just play Minecraft. :P Because that's what I keep hearing about ASUS too. But I don't really think I'll have a need for that. Just one good dedicated graphics card and I'll be set.

I also just looked into the latest version of my old laptop; Inspiron 15. Not lookin that bad. :P

It's going to be used extensively for school work and programming work. And of course obscene amounts of Internet surfing.

You have no idea how hard it is to make spaces.

My typing speed has slowed by almost half on this computer.

I'm not surprised that it slowed.

But looking at the damage done, it seems as if somebody had to literally rip the space bar off to get that sort of damage. Doesn't seem like an easy thing to do.

Still, I understand well that having a good keyboard is essential. ;)

Toshiba Satellite.

Pretty customizable for any price you're looking at, generally good customer support, and really just nice laptops over all. I can't afford one (I can't afford anything atm), but my friend recently got one and trying it out I can say it's pretty good. Just don't expect insta-shipping.

Dell is not bad, but they do tend to run a lot hotter than other computers. We have owned Dell computers for the better part of eight to nine years. We did run into trouble with almost everyone, but there was always some sort of manufacturers warranty covering issues. When I bought my Dell laptop for school five years ago, the fan and keyboard were bad out of the box less than a month in. They sent me new parts and had a guy come out and it was covered. Of course, five years later the keyboard and fan are going out again... The thing lasted me.

If you can get good deals on a computer, by all means take advantage of it. I would seriously recommend getting the extended protection on the computer though.

What other people are saying about Asus is correct. They make good quality parts and pretty much just about every brand uses at least an Asus motherboard in their computer makeup.

I would aim for something with at least an I5 processor and make sure the following number starts with a 3. Anything that is like an I5-2350 is last years processor, you should get the most recent which would be something (making up a random number here) I5-3050. Just make sure it has a 3 following the processor.

Stay away from any Pentium and if you want it to stay fast for a few years, definitely get the i5. I would also aim for about 4GB of Ram and a 500GB hard-drive, but those are pretty common. Don't settle for anything less.

Hopefully that helps some? Sorry if I ranted a bit there...

[Also I had one of those keyboards on my old laptop and it sucked majorly. I tried cleaning out my keyboard once and because I removed the keys my K and L stopped working. Have you tried typing without a K or L? It's hard to do... and then other random buttons just kept popping off. I had to use a wireless keyboard for it all the time. My laptop pretty much became a desktop.]

I'm very satisfied with my Lenovo. I'm not a tech junkie so I don't know much about how it compares, but I feel like I got it for a good price and haven't had any issues with it over the past year or so.

Edit: Actually I did have a problem with the power supply, but the customer support was very good at it was sorted out quickly.

Oh thank you Bunda! Lenovo completely slipped my mind.

Asus and Lenovo are two pretty decent brands that I considered when looking for a new computer, but then I just ended up building one...

You really can't go wrong with one of those two, or if you stick with a Dell.
