I thought I'd try something for the course of the offseason. It's basically the same as the LEGO.com Comic Caption thing, only baseball.

For the first attempt, I've got this picture from Darth Quade's managerial debut, which was also a game I attended, at Nationals Park.

The Problem With Most Sports Fans...

Posted by Lon'qu , Nov 04 2010 · 26 views
MLB
Is that they always think they know more than the folks in charge. Cubs fans all over Chicago are whining that the Cubs didn't hire Ryno. Now I like Ryno, and I don't think it would have been a bad idea to put him as the manager of the Cubs, but I also think that Quade was a better move for three reasons.

1) He's been working as a coach and manager for five times as long as Ryno.

2) He showed he can work with this team during his short time as manager last year.

3) The players all wanted Quade, although they like Ryno also.

Meanwhile, most fans didn't know Quade even existed until he became the interim manager, while they knew Sandberg while he was a player. Many of them are saying that "everybody knew Ryno would leave the Cubs organization if he didn't get the job because he was disrespected by the Cubs", but if Ryno had been hired and Quade left, they would be saying "Quade doesn't deserve to be on the Cubs since he refused to stay just because he didn't get the job he wanted". The Cubs never disrespected Ryno, and frankly, I'm disappointed that he was so set on being a big league manager that he refused to take the Iowa job for a couple more years. Fans simply wanted Ryno because that's who they liked back when he was a player--it had nothing to do with his managing skills, just what they remembered as a kid watching him at second base.

In addition, all of the analysts and experts agree with the Cubs' hiring of Quade. They all know that the Cubs wanted a guy who could get the players to be at their best--not a celebrity, although if Ryno had met their criteria they would have hired him anyway, and most likely given Quade the Iowa job again. On the Hot Stove show last night on MLB Network (the show I stole the Hot Stove logo from) they all commented on how there's a different relationship that the players have with a coach versus a manager, and Quade, of the three former team coaches that have been made the official managers for 2011 (Quade, CHC; Gibson, ARI; and Rodriguez, FLA) did the best, making the Cubs a tough team to play against in September and August.

Personally, I trust Quade to do what he did at the end of '10, and I hope he does, if only to quiet the whiners that hate Hendry for not hiring Ryno. (Although there are several other reasons to dislike the Cubs' GM. tongue.gif )

EDIT: In addition, I also hate it that after one sour season, some Cubs fans are griping that Ramirez picked up his option. They think that Josh Vitters is ready, but I think that Aramis will come back with a vengeance. Maybe he won't play as well as he did in 2008, but then again, very few people could duplicate the greatest Cubs offense in my sixteen-year lifetime. Anyhow, Ramirez still has plenty left in the tank, and Vitters needs to stay in the minors a little longer before they bring him up, maybe to play first for a little while. (Although I don't think it'll be this season. I think the Cubs will go after Dunn or Konerko for first base. My preference is Konerko, although he's bound to be more expensive, and probably has been on the south side for so long that he wouldn't want to go to their interleague rivals)

With Cliff Lee's contract ending, we already have an ALCS rematch between the Rangers and Yankees. The Rangers will surely give a healthily-sized offer, along with some southern hospitality vs. Bronx hostility that Mrs. Lee received, which will clearly hurt New York's chances of obtaining the best postseason pitcher of the past two years. The Yankees on the other hand, will surely be the highest bidders, but they know that Cliff Lee likes Texas, and they also know the Mrs. Lee doesn't like New York. (This is the sort of time when Yankees fans should realize that their team is not invincible, and thus should treat other teams and players with respect, particularly if one of them is one of the best pitchers in the MLB that you'd like to bring to your team) Personally, I'm hoping the Rangers keep him, and I think that Mrs. Lee will make sure they don't go to New York.

Another Texas Ranger, meanwhile, has had his team choose for him. That player is the starting All-Star Game Designated Hitter, Vladimir Guerrero. Guerrero had a great season in Texas, but apparently, the Rangers would rather get a cheaper DH perhaps, in order to give a better offer to Cliff Lee. Adrian Beltre, unlike Vladdy, chose to leave Boston, declining his option for next year, while Jose Reyes of the Mets and Aramis Ramirez of the Cubs have each chosen to stay with their teams another year. In addition, the NL Central Division Champion Reds have declined Harang and Orlando Cabrera's options, while they picked up Arroyo and Gomes' options, and several other options have been picked up or declined across the majors as well, although these are the most significant.

Come on, Blackhawks, if you were going to score a goal anyway, couldn't you do it before the empty netter by New Jersey?

Well, the World Series is over, the Giants are MLB Champions, and now as San Francisco celebrates, the focus of baseball turns to free agency, and to the MLB awards. Big names are on the market, such as the greatest of the postseason pitchers, Cliff Lee, and the man who is widely considered the best player in baseball, Albert Pujols. (Although both the Texas Rangers and the St. Louis Cardinals will be trying to resign their respective stars) In addition, the winner of some close award races during the regular season will finally be announced, including the AL Cy Young race, in which it will be decided whether CC Sabathia and David Price's higher win totals are worth more than the stellar starts and stats of Felix Hernandez, in spite of his win-loss record.

Regardless of whatever happens this offseason, however, you'll find it here on the BaseBlog: Hot Stove.

San Francisco Giants Are Baseball Champions Of The World

Posted by Lon'qu , Nov 02 2010 · 33 views
MLB

Congratulations to the San Francisco Giants, who for the first time since they were the New York Giants have won the World Series, the highest championship of professional baseball in the world. (It wouldn't be called the World Series otherwise. tongue.gif ) Although during the first two games, they looked like a mediocre team that was winning only due to a struggling Texas Rangers ballclub, the Giants showed they were worthy of the title of World Champions in the last two games, winning game 4 with defense, particularly on the part of second baseman Freddy Sanchez, and game 5 with the pitching of their ace and back-to-back National League Cy Young Award winner, Tim Lincecum. This Commissioner's Trophy for the Giants was clearly a team effort, but of all of their team, Edgar Renteria was selected to be the winner of the World Series MVP award, and was also the man who delivered a three-run blast that drove in the series-winning runs.

The Giants' run to the World Series was truly a Cinderella story. They were in an extremely close race in the National League West, and ten games from the end of the season, San Francisco was half a game back from the surprise San Diego Padres after they were shut out by the Chicago Cubs, yet here they are, holders of the 2010 Commissioner's World Series Championship Trophy, the greatest treasure of Major League Baseball. They just barely made it here by the skin of their teeth, who by avoiding a sweep by San Diego, won the NL West without having to play two tiebreaker games to decide two playoff spots, but whether it was by luck or not, the Giants showed through their playoff resilience that they were fully capable of snatching that long-awaited title of World Champions for the city of San Francisco and their fans throughout California and wherever else their fans may be.

Job Interview #2

Posted by Lon'qu , Nov 01 2010 · 21 views

I had another Job Interview today, only this one was at the Quicklube at a car dealership. Basically what I would be doing would be changing oil, coolant, wiper fluid, belts etc., and it would be in the mornings on weekdays. Which would work out well, since I'm homeschooled.

Howdy Folks!

I'm LewaLew, former BZPower RK, former Reporter, and former unofficial baseball blogger. Once, this blog served as the home of my primarily baseball-related musings. Now that I'm in college, I have little time for baseball and BZPower, so it sits here idle except for an occasional visit on my part. Please enjoy or cringe at what you read from my past, and if you'd like, go ahead and comment in the favorite baseball teams entry so that the next time a blue moon rolls around and I visit, I can add you to that content block.

Play Well!

Old Welcome Block

For those of you who don't know (which would mean everyone but Aho-Chan and Sumiki) the BaseBlog is beyond a blog, this is beyond baseball it's a blog that focuses on the great American sport of baseball. The idea of a baseball themed blog has actually been in the works by me ever since Super Bowl XLIV, when Aho-Chan posted a blog entry asking if anyone besides himself didn't care for the Super Bowl, to which I suddenly got the idea of a baseball-themed blog so I could talk about my favorite sport without waiting for someone else to post in the Official Baseball Topic in the Completely Off Topic forum.

Play Ball, folks.
