Hawks Lose 4-3 In Overtime

Posted by Lewigi , Oct 08 2010 · 64 views
All I can say is, Turco was brilliant--Leddy was so-so. Mainly because Leddy couldn't handle a short pass that bounced off of his stick and skates and was then picked up by one of the Avs. They then scored their first goal on that breakaway.

Some solace can be taken for three reasons:

1) Hawks came back from a 3-1 deficit to tie it, forcing overtime.
2) In the NHL, you can get a point in the standings for losing, so long as it is in overtime.
3) In the Stanley Cup run last year, the Hawks lost their opener to the Florida Panthers in a shootout in Helsinki. The PANTHERS. Losing to the Avalanche is much less shameful, particularly on the road in their home, the Pepsi Center.

Yanks, Rangers On Verge Of Sweeps, Giants Freak Out Braves

Posted by Lewigi , Oct 08 2010 · 75 views

I was hoping for all five game series, but this year is looking to be full of sweeps. Pettitte held up, while Pavano couldn't hold back New York, and so the Twins will have to win all three of the next few games--including two in enemy territory at Yankee Stadium.

Likewise, the Rays are headed to Arlington, Texas, where they must also win three in a row to advance, and unlike the Twins, they have to face the third of Texas' top three pitchers in Colby Lewis--not the more questionable Yankees' pitching staff. Even so, if both teams do manage to win two on the road, they would still have to face the opposing teams' aces in C.C. and Cliff Lee. It's looking bleak, in other words.

Meanwhile, game 1 of the NLDS went to the Giants, as Tim Lincecum shut down the Braves. The Freak may not be one of the Cy Young contenders this year, but he's still one of the best in the NL, behind Philly's Halladay, St. Lou's Wainwright, and Colorado's Jimenez.

Today, the second games of both National League Division Series will be played. In Philly, Bronson Arroyo will try to help his team avoid being in the situation the Twins and Rays are facing, but it will be a hard task as the 'O' in the H2O phormula of the Phillies' pitching staff, Roy Oswalt.

In San Francisco, Tommy Hanson will try to help his team split the two games in AT&T Park, but he's got to face Matt Cain of the Giants.

It may be a little late for predictions, but I'll tell you mine anyway. Yanks sweep, Phils sweep. Garza wins game 3 but Rangers win game 4 to advance, Giants win in 5, with game 5 won by the Freak.

Braves Vs. Giants Preview

Posted by Lewigi , Oct 07 2010 · 81 views
Both of these teams are lucky to be here. The Giants beat Mat Latos and the Padres on the last day of the season, eliminating the Padres and winning the West for San Francisco, as well as the Wild Card for the Atlanta Braves. Now the two will face off at AT&T Park for what will probably be the right to face the Phillies and Roy Halladay, the man who no-hit the Cincinnati Reds yesterday. So it looks bleak even for the team that wins this series, but even the mightiest of teams can be taken down by another one that happens to get hot at the right time.

Anyhow, the pitchers who will be tossing for the game 1 win are Derek Lowe for the Braves, and two-time Cy Young winner Tim Lincecum for the Giants. Obviously, the advantage goes to the Giants, who will be at home with their ace, but the Braves still have a good shot, as Lincecum has not been as dominant in 2010 as in past years, and because the Giants have a relatively weak offense once you get past Buster Posey. In addition, the Braves have a more reliable lineup, even without Martin Prado, as they have the advantages of Jason Heyward, Derrek Lee, Omar Infante, and Ted Williams All-Star Game MVP Award winner Brian McCann, the Braves have what it takes to take down the 2010 edition of Tim Lincecum.

Plus, I'm rooting for Bobby Cox and his Braves to win one more World Series for him. biggrin.gif

One Goal: Defending The Cup

Posted by Lewigi , Oct 07 2010 · 53 views
And a very difficult task that will be, in the current era of the National Hockey League. Ever since the '05 lockout, four different teams have failed to carve their names on the Stanley Cup twice in a row. The Hurricanes couldn't do it, nor could the Ducks. Not even the continuously dominant Detroit Red Wings could beat out the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2009, and the Penguins then found themselves eliminated this year by the surprising Montreal Canadiens in the second round. And starting today, at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado.

The Hawks had the fourth best record in their division, and ninth best in the conference in the preseason. Now, that might seem pretty poor for a Stanley Cup Champion, but you've gotta remember that preseason is just a time to get your team in shape, and almost never do you have all of your best players on the ice in the same game. Plus, you might add that one of the favorites to snatch the Cup out of Chicago, the Detroit Red Wings, are the only team in the Central Division that finished with a lower record than the Hawks.

Anyhow, you can expect the usual fast paced playing style of the Hawks, but this year, made even faster with the addition of Marty Turco, whose ability to handle the puck will force the opposition to never be able to let down their guard, even when the puck is in the Hawks' zone.

In addition, the official start of hockey season begins in half an hour, when the Hurricanes play the Wild in Helsinki on Versus.

Howdy Folks!

I'm LewaLew, former BZPower RK, former Reporter, and former unofficial baseball blogger. Once, this blog served as the home of my primarily baseball-related musings. Now that I'm in college, I have little time for baseball and BZPower, so it sits here idle except for an occasional visit on my part. Please enjoy or cringe at what you read from my past, and if you'd like, go ahead and comment in the favorite baseball teams entry so that the next time a blue moon rolls around and I visit, I can add you to that content block.

Play Well!

For those of you who don't know (which would mean everyone but Aho-Chan and Sumiki) the BaseBlog is beyond a blog, this is beyond baseball it's a blog that focuses on the great American sport of baseball. The idea of a baseball themed blog has actually been in the works by me ever since Super Bowl XLIV, when Aho-Chan posted a blog entry asking if anyone besides himself didn't care for the Super Bowl, to which I suddenly got the idea of a baseball-themed blog so I could talk about my favorite sport without waiting for someone else to post in the Official Baseball Topic in the Completely Off Topic forum.

Play Ball, folks.
