Game 162, The End Of The Season?

Since the Turner Broadcasting Service (TBS) doesn't have the sense to show the biggest game of the day between the San Diego Padres and the San Francisco Giants, MLB Network's final game of Pennant Chase Coverage will feature the matchup that may conclude the question of who wins the West, or may prolong it to game 163--which would make it the fourth year in a row that a 163rd game would be necessary.

A questionable call at home plate was the difference maker in this game, but the Padres were not going to argue with it, instead trusting the umpire's judgement, putting an end to their season. The Rockies would then advance on to NLDS to face the NL East champion Phillies, the West Champion Arizona Diamondbacks in the NLCS, and then went on to be swept by the American League Champion Boston Red Sox in the World Series.

John Danks and Nick Blackburn went into a highly competitive pitchers' duel, but the White Sox were the ones that scored first. Simple as that. The White Sox, unlike the winner of the '07 tiebreaker winners, the Rockies, were unable to progress past the first round, losing in the ALDS to the AL East and eventual American League Champion Tampa Bay Rays.

The Twins and Tigers played a twelve inning thriller in the final regular season game at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome, and it would end in a 6-5 win for Minnesota. Unfortunately for the Twins, that would be the last win for them in the Metrodome, as they would proceed to be swept by the AL East Champions and eventual World Series Champion New York Yankees, finishing off baseball in the Metrodome with a loss to New York.

2010 Game 162

The biggest game of the year, perhaps, for the San Diego Padres. Their season rests on this game, and they will be sending Mat Latos to the mound against Jonathan Sanchez. A loss give the Giants the West. A win ties the two, and depending on what the Phillies and Braves do.

Possible Matchups Tommorow:

Should the Padres and Braves win today, both the Giants and the Padres would fly to southern California, and San Diego, where Game 163 would be played by these teams for the National League West division. The loser of this game would then fly to Atlanta, where they would play Game 164 against the Braves for the Wild Card.

Should the exact opposite happen, and the Braves and Padres each lose today, there will be only one tiebreaker game for the Wild Card.

Should the Braves and Padres each win today, the loser of tomorrow's NL West tiebreaker will play the Braves on Tuesday for the Wild Card.

All in all, I'm hoping for a Braves win and a Padres win. And currently, that's going well, as the Braves lead Philly 5-2 in the bottom of the 5th.
